Dalton Sr., 73, of Hillsville, Va., died Jan. 21 in the operating room of Twin County Community Hospital, Galax, Va., following a stabbing that occurred in the backyard of his home. Dalton was a Lancaster County resident for 10 years, working in a Manheim asbestos plant in the 1930s. Born in Hillsville, he was the son of the late George and Ellender Gray Dalton, and the husband of Myrtle Dalton of Hillsville. Dalton worked at various times as a dairy farmer, hay paler, factory worker and sawmill worker. Donald Gene York, 26, Roanoke, has been arraigned on a first-degree murder charge in the Dalton stabbing, and is currently in Carroll County Jail awaiting trial, Carroll County authorities Reported. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 20. A spokeswoman for the Dalton family said Saturday night that York was the son of a close friend of Dalton, and that Dalton had posted a bond of $18,100 in November for York. York's bail had been set for three previous, alleged crimes, and he had earlier spent five years in prison for attempted murder, according to the spokeswoman. Dalton withdrew the bail money he had posted for York in December, she added. Exact circumstances that led to the argument and stabbing at the Dalton home on Jan. 20 were not known. The stabbing occurred at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 21., authorities said. Dalton was rushed to the hospital by a friend, and died there at 2:25 a.m. He was stabbed three times - twice in the stomach and once in the groin - authorities reported. Besides his wife, Dalton is survived by five sons: Waymon, Pulaski, Va; Curtis, Hiwassee, Va., and Roger, Richard and Moody T. Jr., all of Hillsville, and four daughters: Ruth, wife of Roy Joyce, and Wilma, wife of Freddy Martin, both of Hillsville; Faye, wife of Lonnie Burcham, Woodlawn, Va; and Claridean, wife of Troy Moran, Floyd, Va. Also surviving are one brother, Norman, Sylvatus, Va; one sister, Virgie Richardson, Roanoke, Va; 27 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews in Lancaster County. on February 9, 1987.3
