Alton Wythe Prillaman Alton Wythe Prillaman, 89, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Wythe was born November 20, 1931, the son of Alton Andrew and Lena Carter Prillaman in Franklin County, Virginia. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Richard Prillaman; his grandson, Samuel Tristan Pilson; and his son-in-law, Samuel Pilson. "The mildest manner, the gentlest heart" is how Wythe was described in his yearbook from Bassett High School, where he graduated in 1949. His family and friends would say those same words even now. Wythe married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Ruth Howell Prillaman. Their marriage of 69 years was a love story for the ages. Even in their golden years, they might be found dancing in the kitchen or seeking out the birds and wildlife around their home. Wythe is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Antholene Renee Prillaman and her husband, Hugh Meriwether, Shawn Prillaman McCraw and her husband, Mark McCraw; two grandchildren, Caitlin Meriwether Prillaman and Andrew Wythe Prillaman Meriwether and his fiancee, Larkin Johnson. Wythe is also survived by his three sisters, Helen McCullough and her husband, Doug McCullough, Nancy Hale, and Judy Hundley; as well as a number of beloved nieces and nephews. Wythe was very proud of his service in the United States Air Force in the 53rd 9th, 5th Liaison during the Korean war. His favorite item of clothing was his cap with his unit's insignia. Wythe sought to live a life of service after his time in the military as well. He was seen by many people around him as their champion and mentor. He believed living a life with purposeful work was a great joy, and he deeply valued a job done well. (Some might say he was a bit too perfectionist!) Wythe's education in mechanics began working alongside his father on the farm and in the garage, they owned together, He went on to work for E-Systems and Michelin in designing and supervising systems for airplane repair, subway cars in Washington, D.C. and tire retreading. Many of Wythe's family and friends will be warmed by memories of him playing the guitar and singing. From country music to gospel, Wythe's talent for vocals will be sorely missed. When he wasn't singing, he was whistling or humming, even in his last days in the hospital. Wythe was a member of the choir at Halesford Baptist Church for 21 years, where he and his wife Ruth have been active members. Alongside his mild manner and gentle heart, Wythe possessed a quick wit and keen sense of humor. The ability to find humor in challenging situations often carried his family and friends through difficult times. Wythe was a very sociable guy with a playful spirit. He reveled in time with his three grandchildren, and it brought him joy to make others laugh. There's no doubt, though, that his favorite laugh belonged to Ruth. A celebration of Wythe's life will be held once it is safe and healthy to gather.6 He was born on November 20, 1931 at Franklin Co., Virginia.2,6,8 He married Ruth Louise Howell on November 17, 1951 at Bassett, Henry Co., Virginia.2,6,7 Alton Wythe Prillaman died on January 19, 2021 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 89.6

Helen Juanita Prillaman was born on July 13, 1936 at Franklin Co., Virginia.7,3 As of December 21, 1974,her married name was McCullough.2 She married Douglas LeRoy McCullough on December 21, 1974.2,6,3 Helen Juanita Prillaman died on January 22, 2021 at Martinsville, Virginia, at age 84.3 She Helen Prillaman McCullough, 84, died on Friday, January 22, 2021 at King's Grant Retirement Community. Helen was born on July 13, 1936, the daughter of Alton Andrew and Lena Carter Prillaman, in Franklin County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard Prillaman and Alton Wythe Prillaman. Helen graduated from Bassett High School, class of 1955. She attended National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia, and soon thereafter moved to Arlington, Virginia, where she began her decades long career with the Bureau of Land Management within the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. It wasn't long before she met her husband, Douglas LeRoy McCullough, and for the next 47 years, wherever Helen went, Doug was sure to follow; and vice-versa. No couple has been more committed to each other's contentment and happiness. Helen is survived by her husband, Doug; her daughter, Dina Lynn McCullough and her wife, Jennifer Liner; and her granddaughter, Jordan Thayer McCullough. Helen is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Hale and Judy Hundley, as well as a number of beloved nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. After both retired early from the Federal Government, Doug followed Helen to Roanoke, Virginia, where she could be closer to her family. She and Doug devoted many years to real estate development in Roanoke and then subsequently in and around Smith Mountain Lake, where they officially retired. Being close to family was extremely important to Helen… you could always find her at family gatherings laughing hysterically with her siblings, her nieces and nephews and their children. Helen also relished being a grandparent and spending time with her granddaughter. Helen's family will remember that even as a young person, she was devoted to the care of her family. From making sure her little sisters' dolls had newly sewn garments from Santa Claus to ensuring that nieces and nephews had support in being educated, Helen was a champion for her family. She possessed a strong will and determined outlook that helped everyone in her family through difficult times. In all things, Helen and Doug were solid partners and undertook both work and play in the joy of one another's presence. Every winter for about a decade, Helen followed Doug to South Florida, so he could be closer to the fish. Helen treated all who visited to wonderful tours of the natural wildlife, flora and fauna, and history of the area. Helen relished sharing the whereabouts of the manatee, bald eagles, every bird imaginable and even the baby alligators! Many of Helen's family and friends have shared how much they loved and looked forward to her annual holiday letter. She so eloquently shared the ups and downs of any given year and, depending on the topic, made you feel like you had either enjoyed or endured it right alongside her. Those intimate stories often included tales about their many travels around North America in their RV and the wildlife they encountered and thoroughly enjoyed photographing; as well as the highlights of their family's lives too. on January 27, 2021.3
