Robert Speer Patty1,2

M, b. June 16, 1851, d. July 9, 1916
Robert Speer Patty was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, 1300 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas.2 He was born on June 16, 1851 at Armstrong Co., Pennsylvania.1,2,3 He married Mary Emma Smathers, daughter of Isaac Smathers and Harriett Reed, on December 15, 1876 at Edenburg, Berks Co., Pennsylvania.4,1,3,5 Robert Speer Patty died on July 9, 1916 at Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas, at age 65.2,3 He Death of R.S. Patty, Prominent Figure in Oildom, Victim of Apoplexy, Came to County 1904. Was stricken Sunday Evening After Ride in Country - Was Born in 1851. Death came very suddenly last night to Robert S. Patty, one of the leading oil and gas operators of Independence. Mr. Patty and his family had taken an auto ride in the afternoon to Sycamore and other places in the country. Returning home late in the afternoon he ate a hearty supper and then went into another room and sat down. A few minutes later Mrs. Patty spoke to him and he said he was very tired. In another moment she heard him fall from his chair and as soon as she could get to him life was gone. A doctor was called at once but Mr. Patty had passed away. Apoplexy was the direct cause although he had shown no symptoms of it before. Came here in 1904. Mr. Patty lived at 501 South Fifth street. He came here first in 1903 from Bowling Green, Ohio. He then returned east but came back a year later, 1904, settling here and becoming interested in the Wayside Oil field. At one time he owned approximately 1,000 acres of good leases in that pool. Later he sold many of these and now owned 120 acres with eighteen or twenty wells, O.W. Compton being his partner in this enterprise. Mr. Patty had two sons here, both of whom are employed in the Prairie offices. Mr. Patty was a highly esteemed citizen, being public spirited in every way. He was loyal to his friends and stood in high public esteem. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian church and his death will be mourned particularly by that organization to which he gave so much of his effort. A Native of Pennsylvania. Mr. Patty was born in Armstrong county, Pa., June 16, 1851, and was 65 years and 23 days old at the time of his death. He was married Dec. 15, 1876, to Mary E. Smathers of Clarion county, Pa. Three children were born to them, Harry L., Roy Levern and Eddie R. A Deserved Tribute. A history of Ohio once said of Mr. Patty: "He is essentially the architect of his own fortune, a genial gentelman who has won his way to success by energy and enterprise and today is conceded to be one of the best business men and most successful operators in the oil fields of this or any other state." Funeral services will be held from the late home tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by Rev. F.L. Pettet of the First Christian church. Burial will be in the new mausoleum. The Masonic order will have charge of the services at the mausoleum. on July 10, 1916.3
