Donald Lee Jones, 26, of the 1000 block of Bullitt Avenue, was killed while fishing on a railroad trestle Friday afternoon. Debbie Jean Poff , 33, of Salem, died Friday night after her car was hit at a crossing, officials said. Roanoke police said Jones and a friend were fishing near the 2200 block of Kenwood Boulevard Southeast about 2:15 p.m. when the companion, whose name was not released, warned Jones that a train was coming. Jones tried to run away along the tracks, but tripped and fell, police said. Poff was passing through the barriers about 9:20 p.m. at the Union Street railroad crossing in Salem and was struck by an eastbound train. She was alone in the car. Poff was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she died at about 10:30 p.m., police said. on March 16, 1991.6 She Debbie Jean Poff, age 33, of Salem, died Friday. She was an employee of Dominion Bank. Surviving are her mother, Almona T. Poff of Florida; three sisters, Paullette McKinney, Tennessee; Kathy Poff of Florida; Karen Crumley, Ohio; five brothers, Roger Poff, Ricky Poff, Thomas Poff, Anthony Poff, and Jeff Poff, all of Florida; a number of nieces and nephews; special friend, James Blevins. Funeral services and burial will be in Florida. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's North Chapel. on March 17, 1991.1

Carl Joseph Brown Carl Joseph Brown, Jan 20, 1960 - Dec 14, 2024. Carl Joseph Brown, 64, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph J. Brown; his mother, Linda Spradlin Musick; and his stepfather, James W. “Jimmy” Musick Jr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Debra Lynn Poff Brown, as well as his infant nephew, Justin Eric Tingler. Surviving are his two children, Kendall Anne Brown (Garrett) and Devin Michael Brown; his loving sisters, Jill R. Acker (Barry) and Jami L.M. Tingler (Eric); and his nieces and nephews: Maggie L. Gallimore, Jacob Light, Brandon Acker, Erica Tingler, and James Tingler. He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Bill R. and Joyce D. Poff; sister-in-law, Dana Poff Light, several aunts, an uncle, numerous cousins, and many friends, including dear friends Tommy Miller and Donnie Page; and his beloved kitty, “Buddy.” Carl was a graduate of William Byrd High School. He was a proud employee of the Fred Whitaker Company in Roanoke, VA, for 30 years, and was most recently employed by ReaderLink Distribution Center in Salem. Carl was an avid hockey, NASCAR, football, and baseball fan, with his favorites being the Boston Bruins, Richard Petty, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Orioles. He enjoyed attending drag races and hockey games, fishing, deer hunting, and birdwatching, and was a lover of ‘69 Dodge Chargers, beagles, and cats. Carl will be remembered as a devoted son, loving father, cherished brother, caring uncle, and loyal friend to those he left behind. He will forever and always be missed.
