Born May 26, 1923, at Walkertown, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Thomas Gills and Chloe Cole Gills. Mr. Gills served his country proudly during World War II, he was a longtime member of the Coal Ci-ty Community Church, and he owned and operated the Coal City Barber Shop. He also played and loved bluegrass music and won several fiddle competitions in the state of West Virginia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gills was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Meadows Gills; brother, Grady Gills; and a sister, Eva Gills Cummings. He was survived by his sister, Bonnie Gills Cole of South Carolina; two daughters, Vicki Gills Nelson and husband, David, of Coal City and Stephanie Gills Holland and husband, Kenny, of Nash-ville, Tenn. He will be sadly missed by his two loving daughters. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Arista Nelson Wise, Christina Nelson Reed, Dustin Nelson, Kaden Slade Holland, Kristen Holland, and Keeley Holland; and great-grandchildren, Samantha Wise, Caitlin Wise, Gracie Wise, Mary Katherine Reed, Harleigh Reed, and Nikki Wise. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia. Burial will follow at Meadows Family Cemetery, with Pastor Jack Tankersly officiating. Pallbearers will be relatives and friends. Friends may gather with the family from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Gary Curtiss Calvert Gary & Nancy Calvert passed away May 24, 2020 after 60 plus years of marriage. They were preceded in death by son Mark and parents Jake and Virginia Calvert and Charlie and Audrey Johnston. They are survived by their son Paul Calvert; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Nancy is also survived by her sister, Myra Sherriff and brother Ray Johnston. They were both lifelong residents of Raleigh County and ran the hardware store in Coal City for 18 years. Nancy was a member of Sunset Hills Missionary Baptist Church and an active member in T.O.P.S. She was a wonderful homemaker and terrific cook who served everyone she could her entire life. She will greatly missed by Paul and Amy, Debra Dean and countless friends. She was the sweetest soul anyone ever knew. Service arrangements will be announced at a later date. But now we see through a mirror darkly, but then face to face. Born in Princewick, WV January 14, 1950 he was the son of the late Joseph Buchanan and Virginia Arista Meadows Calvert. Oakey retired from the Mercer County School System in 2007 after 35 years of service last serving as Principal of Mercer Elementary School in Princeton. He began his career at Montclam Elementary School as the first male Kindergarten Teacher in the Mercer County School System. He later transferred to Sun Valley Elementary where he taught sixth grade and eventually became Principal. He later served as Principal of Straley Elementary before his final move to Mercer Elementary. Following retirement Oakey worked for the WV Department of Education for several years traveling around the state visiting schools to promote the importance of higher education and the availability of the Promise Scholarship. In recent years Oakey substituted in Mercer County Schools as a Principal and also in the classroom, doing what he loved most in education, teaching children. He was a graduate of Stoco High School and earned his B.S. in Education and his Masters Degree at Concord University. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Princeton. Survivors include his wife and love of his life, Donna Ann Terry Calvert of Princeton; two daughters, Cari Beth Calvert Triplett and husband David of Greensboro, NC and Julie Tiller and husband Chad of Summersville; three grandchildren, Erin Farley Cron and husband Justin, Hannah Farley Jackson and husband Harley and PFC Roman Gum and wife Tommi; five great-grandchildren, Landon, Liam, Nora, Emily and Riley; one brother, Gary Calvert and wife Nancy of Coal City, WV; and his faithful constant canine companion Sophie. Services to celebrate the life of Oakey will be conducted 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 21, 2019, at the First Baptist Church in Princeton with Pastor Andrew Maynor, Pastor Gary Raulerson and Susan Peyton officiating. In keeping with his wishes Oakey will be cremated following the service. on August 19, 2019.4

Bill was born in Princeton, WV where his father worked for the Railway Express Agency and his mother worked as a church secretary. Bill excelled in school both athletically and academically. He was a star member of the 1943 Princeton High School Tigers runner-up State Championship basketball team and was also the President of his 1943 Senior Class. He received athletic scholarships to West Virginia University (WVU) where he played center on the basketball team and tackle on the Mountaineers' football team while maintaining academic excellence receiving his Phi Beta Kappa key and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in January 1949. His most famous football moment came in the fall of '44 when WVU defeated Penn State in State College, Pennsylvania. With WVU defending on its own 7 yard line late in the 4th quarter, he recovered a Penn State fumble to win the game. The victory at State College was repeated by only two other WVU teams in the long history of the rivalry, which ceased in 1992. Bill was also a member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. His college education was interrupted when he served the post-WWII occupational force in the Army in the 350th Infantry, 88th Div. ETO, 5 Army NATO, WVANG & ORC. He served in Italy but also played basketball for the US Army in Europe. In 1947 he married Elizabeth Ann Baber in Morgantown, and was employed as an accountant for the local Ford automobile dealership. He was then offered a position with Mathieson Chemical Company in Morgantown which would become a lifelong career. In 1955, his work transferred him to the Olin-Mathieson corporate offices in Baltimore, MD and the family settled in Catonsville, MD. They joined the Christian Temple Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Catonsville. In 1959, Bill was transferred to the Olin-Mathieson Chemical Plant near Brandenburg, KY where the family would make their home and become members of Brandenburg United Methodist Church. Bill had a passion for golf and was involved in the design of the Hillcrest Country Club's golf course. He also enjoyed volunteer coaching Little League football and serving as a scoutmaster. In 1964, Bill became an Accounting Engineer working for Olin's corporate offices in Stamford, CT but retained residence in Brandenburg. Bill retired from Olin in 1985 and in retirement split his time between Brandenburg and Sun City, AZ where he continued his love of golf, was a member of the United States Golf Association and worked as a PGA Marshall for the Phoenix Open. He studied Native American lifestyle, art and culture and took many sight-seeing trips in the desert southwest. In 2000 he returned to Brandenburg to live full time until advancing Alzheimer's disease required his relocation to Marshview Retirement Community in Savannah, GA in late 2006. He later moved to Shadowmoss Plantation Alzheimer's Care Facility where he resided until his death. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church, Princeton, WV. A graveside service will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park, Princeton. I on May 18, 2013.4
