Richard Stanley Goings was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery, 501 West McCreight Avenue, Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio.2 He was born on September 30, 1934 at Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio.2,3,8 He married Shirley Ann Rankin on August 15, 1953 at Springfield, Clark Co., Ohio.2,3 Richard Stanley Goings Young Springfield Couple Killed. Car hits tree on Route 4 west of city. Richard S. Goings and wife die instantly. A young Springfield man and his wife were killed Christmas Day when their automobile crashed into a tree on State Route 4, southwest of Springfield. Dead are: Richard Stanley Goings, 19 and his wife, Shirley Ann, also 19, who resided in an apartment at 1527 ½ W. Main St. Married only four months ago, Mr. Goings was a sophomore student in business administration at Wittenburg College, and his wife was employed as a secretary at Wright-Patterson air Force Base. State Highway Patrolman said it is believed the couple was instantly killed. The officers received a call at 12:05 a.m. on the fatal accident which occurred 1.8 miles southwest of Springfield at a row of trees near the intersection of Mill Rd. The two young people were the only persons riding in the 1950 model two-door Ford, which patrolman said was demolished. They were headed towards Springfield when the car plunged off the left side of the highway, patrolmen said. Whether Mr. Goings car was forced off the road by another vehicle or whether a mechanical defect caused the car to lunge out of control may never be answered accurately, Mr. Goings father, Richard Goings, of 2041 Columbus av., told a Springfield Daily News reporter that his son was "a good driver and took great pride in keeping his car in tip-top condition." The youth preferred to use his middle name "Stanley." He and the former Shirley Ann Rankin were childhood sweethearts ever since they attended Warder Park School. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rankin of 868 Champion av., and his parents were neighbors a number of years ago. The youngsters went through Shaffer Junior High School and Springfield Senior High School together, graduating in the Class of 1952. They were married Aug. 15 in a church wedding at the Story-Hypes Methodist Church and started housekeeping at the W. Main st. apartment. The bodies were taken to the Richards Memorial Home from the tragedy scene by ambulance. Coroner Austin Richards reported both apparently died instantly or within a few minutes of the crash. Both suffered compound fractures of the legs and severe head and internal injuries, Mr. Richards reported. The deaths raise the present toll of traffic fatalities to 14 in the Clark County area outside of Springfield this year. The toll in Springfield to date this year is six. Born in Springfield July 5, 1934, Mrs. Goings is survived by a twin sister, Jacqueline E. Rankin of 282 Champion av., also employed as a secretary at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Other survivors in addition to the parents and twin sister are a half brother, John of Detroit, Mich; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lottie Rankin of Springfield; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Drake of Compton, Ky., and a number of aunts and uncles in the Springfield area. Mr. Goings was born in Springfield Sept. 30, 1934. in addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, James of Springfield, and four sisters, Jeanne, a student at Olivet Nazarene College, Sondra, a student at Springfield High School, Helen, a student at Shaffer Junior High School, and three year old Pamela. Also, there are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Moore of Springfield, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Louva Goings of south Vienna, Route 2. The young couple were at the Goings residence on Columbus av. for Christmas Eve supper, after which they went over to the apartment to see the teen-agers' Yuletide tree. Then, the couple visited the Rankins on Champion av. and left there about 9 p.m. declaring they wanted to take a short ride before going to bed, member of the family related. Burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. on December 25, 1953.2 He died on December 25, 1953 at Clark Co., Ohio, at age 19.2
