He loved to attend sporting events in which his grandchildren were very active at Notre Dame and Palma high schools. He was active in leading meetings for Alcoholics Anonymous at the Soledad Correctional Facility and working directly in people's lives. He was an avid 49ers and San Francisco Giants fan. He loved to spend time at his cabin in Arroyo Seco. Memberships: Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, life member of Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614 and Alcoholics Anonymous for more than 27 years. Military: U.S. Army, World War II. He was preceded in death by his brother, Chase Holaday, and sister, Thais Salmina Attinger. Survivors: Wife of 56 years, Marie Holaday of Salinas; sons, Nate Holaday of King City, John Holaday and Louis Holaday, both of Salinas, and Mark Holaday of Sacramento; daughter, Julie Given of Salinas; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marie was born February 11, 1924 in Santa Maria, CA to George and Mae Hartnell and resided for over 80 years in Salinas. She attended Sacred Heart School, Salinas High School, and Salinas Junior College, later renamed Hartnell Junior College after her grandfather William P. Hartnell. While in school she proudly supported our servicemen by participating as a member of the USO and the Dancing Draftees. She met her husband, Miles Eugene Holaday, while working with him at the Agricultural Commissioner's office. They were married February 9, 1947 in Yuma, AZ. Marie was first and foremost a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was actively involved in all of her kids and grandkids activities and sports. She also worked for many years at the Monterey County Election Department and as an Avon representative. She was very active and devoted to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Altar Society and attended numerous Cursillo Retreats. She worked diligently to put all of her kids through the Catholic School system. Marie was a passionate and fanatical follower of the San Francisco Giants, which she passed on to everyone in the family. She enjoyed summers at their cabin in Arroyo Seco their "piece of heaven on earth" - always with the Giants games on the radio. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Katherine Health Care Center for the loving care that was extended to Marie in her final months. She was preceded in death by her husband, Miles; brothers, Jim and George Hartnell; and her sisters, Joanne Silacci, Jean Harbin and Pat Eich. She is survived by her five children, Nate and Cindy Holaday, Louis Holaday, Mark and Karen Holaday, Joe and Julie Given, John and Bonnie Holaday; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Hartnell; and sisters, Dolores Seydel and Eileen Morrison. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901. Rosary will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas, CA 93901. Burial will be held at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 850 Abbott St., Salinas, CA 93901. A reception will follow at the parish hall.
