His Social Security Number was 235-03-3018.4 Arthur Herman Goad was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.4,10,11 He married Janice Jewell.4,12 Arthur Herman Goad was born on October 24, 1909 at Procious, Clay Co., West Virginia.4,6,7 He died on November 4, 1952 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 43.4,8 He Arthur H. Goad Found Clubbed - Police announced early this afternoon that they had taken into custody for questioning an ex-convict who was seen with Arthur Herman Goad early today shortly before he was found fatally injured. Arthur Herman Goad, 43, of 305 Grove Av., manager of the furniture department of the Sears Roebuck and Co. store here, was knocked in the head with a wooden club and fatally injured early today, police said. Detective Lt. Charles Honaker said "there is no doubt that the man was murdered and robbery probably was the motive." Goad was taken to Charleston General hospital in a Wilson Funeral Home ambulance at 4:15 a.m. and died at 6:30 a.m. Death was caused by a skull injury, attendants said. The unconscious Goad was found at the rear of the People's building on downtown Summers street by a man identified by police as Walter Stevens, who was on his way to work. Detective W. W. Fisher said that "a bloody piece of a wooden post was nearby and is in the possession of police. It apparently is the murder weapon." Honaker said details of events leading up to the slaying were vague, but he added that, a man known to have been with Goad early today when Goad was last seen alive was being sought. "We have questioned some people," he added, "but we have made no arrests." Fisher said it had been established that Goad left his home at 11 p.m. and told his wife he was going out to see friends and would be back in a short time. Fisher said he learned that Goad had between $40 and $50 in his possession at that time. When he was discovered unconscious he had nothing in his pockets. Goad had been an employee of Sears Roebuck for 21 years. He was born at Clay and was a graduate of Charleston high school. Surviving him are the widow, Janice; a son, Roger; a daughter, Roseanna; his mother, Mrs. Donna Goad of Charleston; a sister, Mrs. R. L Thompson, a brother, John H. Goad, both of Charleston. on November 4, 1952.8 He Oscar Ervin Schoocraft waived to the grand jury today on charges of murder and armed robbery in the fatal beating of Arthur Herman Goad early yesterday morning. Schoolcraft was jailed pending announcement from the prosecuting attorney's office as to whether bond will be granted, Detective Lt. Charles Honaker said. He was arraigned before Police Judge Joseph Thomas. Goad, 43, manager of the Sears, Roebuck and Co. furniture department here, was found unconscious and beaten about the head in an alley behind the People's building early yesterday, a bloody wooden bludgeon laying nearby. He died two hours later in Charleston General hospital. Schoolcraft was arrested by officers Kenneth D. C. Stover and Kenneth Hager at 9 a.m, five hours after the body was found. Honaker said that Schoolcraft signed a statement to the effect that he and Goad had a fight, and that Goad started it. Honaker said that robbery was evidently the motive. Goad reportedly had about $50 when he left home Monday night. When he was found his wallet lay empty nearby. Schoolcraft had only a small amount of cash on him at the time of his arrest, Honaker said. Schoolcraft, who lives, on Fourth street, repeatedly told police that Goad was alive after the fight. He was quoted by police as saying, "That man jumped me and I had to fight him off. When I left him, he was still alive." Schoolcraft told police that he was released from prison a little more than a month ago after serving six-year term for armed robbery and grand larceny. Goad, a native of Clay and a graduate of Charleston high school, had worked for the Sears company for 21 years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Janice Goad; a son, Roger, at home; a daughter, Roseanna, at home; his mother, Mrs. Donna Goad of Charleston; a sister, Mrs. R. L. Thompson of Charleston, and a brother, John H. Goad of Charleston. Other officers participating in the investigation are P. W. Patton, L. D. Cunningham, Bernard Settle and T. E. Young. Funeral services for Goad will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Bartlett mortuary chapel with the Rev. E. Ray Cole officiating. Burial will be in Sunset memorial park. on November 5, 1952.10
