She had fallen ill in February while visiting her daughter in Florida. She was born on Monday, Jan. 8, 1912, at Norton, a daughter of the late Gordon D. Sturm and Norah Elmore Sturm. On March 23, 1929, she was married to Hoddie Judston Rowan, who preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1970. She is survived by one son, George G. Rowan and wife, Dorothy, of Pappahannock, Va; four daughters, Catherine Brackins and husband, Clarence, of Gastonia, N.C., Juanita Kiddy and husband, Wayne, of Vancleave, Miss., Joan O’Hara of Satellite Beach, Fla., and Arlene Teel and husband, Paul, of Pine Colo; two sisters, Eulah Dean of Buckhannon and Maxine Calain and husband, Lawrence, of Bridgeport; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Sturm of Elkins; seven granddaughters; eight grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were six brothers, John C. Snodgrass, Lester, Joseph, Bernard, Clyde and Bill Sturm; and four sisters, Louisa Reed, Marie Loudin, Freda Phares and Pauline Shaffer. She attended the schools of Randolph County, was a homemaker and a member of the Rowan Memorial Church at Mabie. The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins Saturday, June 11, from noon until 2 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Stella Faye Moyer will officiate and interment will follow at the Upper Rowan Cemetery at Mabie. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Virginia Catherine Sturm Rowan. She was born November 13, 1916 in Harding, WV a daughter of the late Gordon and Nora Elmore Sturm. On May 5, 1934 she married John David Dean who preceded her in death on January 11, 1977. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, John David Dean and eleven brothers and sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Vonnie Poling and husband Bob of Buckhannon; one son, John C. Dean and wife Sue of Buckhannon; two grandsons, Holt Poling and wife Mary Alice and J.D. Poling all of Buckhannon; two granddaughters, Melinda Crislip and husband Anthony and Amy Poling DeBarr all of Buckhannon; four great-grandsons, Seth Poling, Robert Poling, John David Dalton Crislip and Ean DeBarr all of Buckhannon; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Poling and Jordan Raye Crislip both of Buckhannon and one sister, Maxine Calain and husband Fred of Bridgeport, WV. Mrs. Dean was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mt. Herman United Brethren Church, the Mt. Herman Ladies Aid Society, Farm Women’s Club, Eastern Star Chapter # 18 and the Buckhannon Senior Citizen Center where she was also a cook. Friends will be received Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 5-8 PM at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Maxine Calain, 90, of Bridgeport, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, in Meadowview Manor Health Care Center in Bridgeport, where she had made her home for the past five years. She was born in Barbour County, the daughter of the late Gordon and Nora Ellamore Sturm. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick L. Calain in 2010. They had celebrated 69 years of marriage. Mrs. Calain is survived by two daughters, Pam Skotnicki of Ripley and Fay Jamison and husband, Wayne, of Bridgeport. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was also preceded in death by 12 siblings and a son-in-law, Bill Skotnicki. She was a lifelong member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Bridgeport Originals Community Educational Outreach Society. on February 26, 2015.⁵
