Elvin Wayne Timmons was born on October 11, 1927 at Ropesville, Hockley Co., Texas.2,4 He married Myra Jean Bownds on August 12, 1950.2 Elvin Wayne Timmons died on March 25, 2016 at Lubbock, Lubbock Co., Texas, at age 88.4 He Elvin Wayne Timmons. LUBBOCK - Wayne Papa Timmons of Lubbock, Texas, departed from this life on March 25, 2016, at the age of 88 years. Services will be at 2 p.m. March 29, 2016, Sanders Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend John Ballard and Wayne's nephew Buzz Timmons presiding. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2016, at Sanders Funeral Home. Wayne was born on Oct. 11, 1927, in Ropesville, Texas. He graduated from New Home High School in 1945. Wayne received an Associate's Degree from Wayland Baptist University where he was a member of Harley Redin's first basketball team. Wayne went on to continue his education at North Texas State University where he earned a Bachelor's of Science degree. Wayne then earned his Master's Degree in Educational Administration at Texas Tech University. Wayne married the love of his life, Myra Bownds, on Aug. 12, 1950. It was a marriage that lasted 65 years until his death. Wayne and Myra were both educators. They started their teaching career at New Home, Texas, where Wayne taught classes and coached all of the sports offered while Myra taught Home Economics. They continued their teaching careers in Anton, Texas, and were there for four years. They then moved to Lubbock, where Myra taught at the newly opened Monterey High School and Wayne took a job at Cooper I.S.D. where he taught and coached in grades 7 to 12. Wayne retired from education while working at Ropesville I.S.D. after 33 years in the business. Myra retired after teaching for 32 years at Texas Tech University. Wayne was an outstanding father to his children, Phil and Mary Margaret. He always had time to introduce them to all of the various athletic sports, fishing and hunting. Many an afternoon he was still catching Phil as he worked on his pitching or practicing his basketball shots as the sun fell below the horizon. All after a full day of teaching and coaching. Wayne encouraged Mary Margaret to play basketball in her pre-teen years and worked with her on how to pass and shoot the basketball and, even as awkward as she was, he turned her into a pretty decent basketball player as well. Wayne's true passion and his favorite time to share with his children was fishing! Every time Wayne passed a body of water he would invariably wonder aloud to whoever would listen whether there was a big old bass in there. He made sure that both Mary Margaret and Phil had a fishing pole in their hand as soon as they were old enough to walk and that they had every available opportunity to fish no matter where we traveled. Wayne also, in true Texas fashion, made sure Phil had a .22 rifle at 10 years of age and would take Phil to the Timmons' Home Place at Lakeview, Texas, often and turn him loose to roam the pasture and shoot whatever he felt needed shooting while he visited with his cherished brother, Frank. Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, W.H. and Maggie Timmons; four brothers, Herman Timmons, Roy Timmons, Frank Timmons, and Billy Timmons; and two sisters, Lucille Byers and Mary McCormick; and his daughter, Mary Margaret Timmons-Rose. Those left to cherish Wayne's memory are his loving wife, Myra Bownds-Timmons; his son, Phillip Timmons; daughter-in-law, Debra Hagens-Timmons; and six grandchildren, Justin Rose, Austin Rose, Michael Rose, Michelle Rose, Keviah Timmons, and Rankin Timmons. The six grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The Timmons family would like to give special recognition and express our sincere appreciation to Ms. Nicole Ward for her tender, loving care, tremendous compassion, and her enduring friendship with our Papa over the past three years. Thank you, Nicole, you will always be a part of our family! On March 27, 2016.4
