She was devoted to the Salvation Army, where she served many roles, including hospitality sergeant, correspondence coordinator and bell-ringer. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia A. Troester and her husband Wayne of Virginia Beach, and Elizabeth Carol Uhl and her husband Bill of Suffolk; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Elmer F. Ahart Sr. and a grandson, Howard Lee Ahart. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Family Choice Funerals & Cremations, 5401 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Salvation Army, 5516 Raby Road, Norfolk, with Lt. Jacob Granados officiating. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8100 Granby St., Norfolk. The family would like to express their gratitude to Wanda Wyatt and the staff of Sentara Hospice for their exceptional care during her illness. on August 10, 2011.5

Born March 23, 1906, at Welch, she was the daughter of the late James and Nina Conner Bruster. Mrs. Mayse was the manager of White Cross Pharmacy and Gift Shop in Beckley for 43 years until 1974. She was a member of the United Methodist Temple for 80 years and a member of Circle One. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women for 68 years, member of the Beckley Woman’s Club for 50 years, member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Judea Shrine No. 13 for many years, member of the Bethlehem Chapter No. 71 Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Mayse had been a resident of Summit Square Retirement Community in Waynesboro since May 1999 and had been a resident of Beckley since 1919. She married her late husband, Harry H. Mayse Jr., on March 6, 1946, and was also preceded in death by her sister, Edith Bruster Gorsica. Survivors include a nephew, John J. Gorsica III and his wife, Mary Agnes, of Waynesboro, Va; a great-niece, Angela Nina Gorsica of Durham, N.C; a great-nephew, John J. Gorsica IV of Grayslake, Ill; and her cousin, Jeannette Bond and her husband, Paul, of Beckley. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Pallbearers will be Ira Richmond, Ron Patterson, David Lamb, Paul Burdette, David Earehart and Bob Loudermilk. on February 13, 2001.7
