Nelson served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. He retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant in Radford. Nelson was a member of his local Ruritan Club and was an active and faithful member of the Floyd County Rescue Squad. He was a member of Haven's Chapel United Methodist Church and served his Lord Jesus Christ in his everyday walk of life. Nelson was preceded in death by his father and mother, Harvey and Mae Hopkins Hale; his stepmother, French Cole Hale; his brothers, Harman and Cody Hale; and his sisters, Elsie Bennington and Dorothy Hale. He is survived by his wife, Glada Sowers Hale; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dewey and Mary Ellen Hale of Roanoke, John and Karen Hale of Roanoke; one daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Danny Thompson of Copper Hill. Nelson is also survived by seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 5, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Floyd Baptist Church in Floyd. Interment will follow in Restvale Cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday at Gardner Funeral Home where the family will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Floyd County Rescue Squad at P.O. Box 257, Floyd, Va. 24091. Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd is in charge of the arrangements. on December 4, 2003.1

Glada had seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Vera Sowers, who is a resident of Friendship Manor in Roanoke. Glada was a long time member of Havens Chapel United Methodist Church in Check and she worked for Donkenny, Inc., in Floyd for many years. She loved to work in the garden and tend her flowers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012, at Gardner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Gardner Funeral Home on Saturday, July 14, 2012, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The children would like to thank South Roanoke Nursing Home for the care given to their mother for the last four years and to Gentle Shepherd for their care in the last few weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Floyd County Rescue Squad, P.O.
