Also surviving are a son, William J., Indianapolis; a grandchild; two brothers, Paul, route 4; and Elbert, Marion; two sisters, Mrs. E. V. Moore, Peru, rural route; and Mrs. R. P. Walker, South Orange, N. J. A retired C. and O. engineer, he was a lifelong resident of Miami county. He retired Sept. 28, 1947. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, chapter, council. and Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne, the B. of L. E. Elks, and Amaranth. Burial will be in the Reyburn cemetery. on September 12, 1953.6 He died on September 12, 1953 at Peru Township, Miami Co., Indiana, at age 69.4,6

He was a 1939 graduate of Peru High School and received his undergraduate degree from Franklin College. He completed his Law Degree in 1953 after serving in World War II with the 84th Infantry Division as a 2nd Lieutenant. A paragon of America’s Greatest Generation, he participated in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central European campaigns and his military decorations include the WWII Victory Medal, the EAME Theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, the American Theatre Ribbon and the Combat Infantry Badge. While still in the service, he met an Army nurse from Louisiana, 2nd Lieutenant Daisy Lorena Wales and they were married in Indianapolis in 1947. They were married for 61 years until her death in 2009. Bill completed law school after starting a family and was admitted to the Bar Association in 1953. He was awarded a J.D. Degree from the Indiana University School of Law in 1967. He worked as vice-president and Trust Of?cer with AFNB for 25 years, before it merged with Bank One and then became part of Chase Bank. In the 1960’s he was appointed by Governor Matthew Welch to serve on the Governor’s Advisory Council on Mental Health. He served on this board for 18 years, 12 of them as chairman. Governor Otis Bowen appointed Mr. Tillett Vice Chairman of the Trust Code Study Commission, whose work ultimately resulted in the Indiana Trust Code. While attending Law School, Mr. Tillett helped establish the I.U. Indianapolis Law School Alumni organization. He was a charter member and one of its ?rst presidents. He also helped establish the local chapter of the Phi Delta Phi. In 1987, Mr. Tillett was awarded the Indiana University School of Law - Indianapolis Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Mr. Tillett is a long-standing member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church. He is survived by his son, Jim Tillett, his daughter, Nancy Tillett and cousins Judy Phelps, Jeff and Brenda Tillett and Jane Tillett Williams. A private family graveside service will be held at Reyburn Cemetery, Peru, IN. Military graveside services will be provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. on June 5, 2015.4

Born to William Benjamin Wales and Adelaide (Della) Connolly-Wales, of Tinus, she was the youngest of their 10 children. After being raised on the family farm in St. Helena Parish, Lorena, as she was known to her Southern family, completed her nurse's training at Our Lady of the Lake School of Nursing in Baton Rouge and entered the U.S. Army Nursing Corps as a second lieutenant during World War II. While stationed at Fort Robinson in Little Rock, Ark., she met her future husband, William J. Tillett , and they relocated to his hometown of Peru, Ind., where she worked at the Wabash Railroad Employee Hospital. When the couple moved to Indianapolis in the 1950s, she worked for several years at St. Vincent Hospital. A longtime resident of the Broad Ripple area, she was an active member of the Meridian Street United Methodist Church. Dee, as she was known to her Northern family, was predeceased by all her siblings, and a nephew, William Wales. Survived by her husband of 61 years, William; daughter, Nancy E. Tillett ; son, James F. Tillett ; and nine additional nieces and nephews, Ronnie Wales, H. Christopher Wales, Ginger Greene, David Wales, Ernest Wales, Robert Wales, Joyce Burkeen, Marion Wales and Bobby Wales. Burial in the Reyburn Cemetery with military graveside services provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit. on January 14, 2009.5
