Harry Lincoln Vest On 12 February, 1944 in Italy, PFC Vest, an assistant machinegunner in support of the center rifle platoon, during a determined enemy attack, took over the gun when the gunner became a casualty. His position was isolated by very heavy enemy small arms fire and assistance was unable to reach him. The onrushing enemy pushed to within close proximity of his emplacement, and, being unable to render effective fire from a fixed position on the enemy's defilade forces, PFC Vest disengaged the gun from its mount and courageously exposed himself to fire on the enemy from a kneeling position with devastating results. PFC Vest was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while performing his gallant feat. His demonstration of aggressiveness, dogged determination, and devotion to duty materially aided in successfully repelling this determined enemy attack.6 He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.7,8,9 He was born on March 10, 1922 at Matoaka, Mercer Co., West Virginia.7,2,9 He died on February 12, 1944 at Italy at age 21.7,9,6
