     Lula Frances Kingery Frances Kingery Lakey, 85, passed away May 24, 2016 after a long goodbye to Alzheimers. She was born in Danville, Virginia on June 25, 1931, but resided in Chesapeake since 1951. She was a longtime member of the Victory Blvd. Baptist Church in Portsmouth where she taught vacation bible school for 20 years. She sang in the Victory Quartet. Later became a member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church in Portsmouth. She loved flowers and kept her yard beautiful. She was the heart and soul of her family. Survivors include her husband Raymond M. Lakey, of 66 years, a daughter, Connie Martin (Charles) of Elloree, SC; two sons, Walter Lakey (Barbara Bo) of Chesapeake and Thomas Lakey (Lauren) of Suffolk; two sisters, Glena Burke of Danville, VA and Ella Mae Parker of Ft. Mill, SC; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; and was predeceased, by a brother William Kingery. A special thanks to all the caregivers at the Sentara Nursing Center in Portsmouth; Rachel Weston, Jamie Tutor, Tiffany Pacifico and Jackie Stevens. A graveside service will be held in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.4 She was buried at Albert G.      Raymond Monroe Lakey was buried at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milner Road, Suffolk, Virginia.2,3 He Raymond Monroe Lakey, 95, formerly of 2252 Tennessee Drive, Chesapeake, VA passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Portside Health and Rehab in Portsmouth, Virginia after a long, full and happy life. He was born on March 1, 1926 in Danville, Virginia, the youngest of six children to the late, James Walter Lakey and Mary Elizabeth Lakey. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Frances Kingery Lakey; brothers, James Walter Lakey, Jr., Allen Lakey and Linwood "Bootsy" Lakey; and sisters, Kathleen Lynch and Eleanor Hancock. Mr. Lakey retired from the Portsmouth Navy Yard. He enjoyed fishing and hunted many years with the Sebrell Hunt Club in Courtland, Virginia. He is survived by his three children, sons, Walter Ray Lakey (Barbara "Bo") of Chesapeake, VA, Thomas "Tommy" Grey Lakey (Lauren) of Whaleyville, VA; daughter, Connie Lakey Martin (Charles) of Elloree, SC; four grandchildren, Courtney (Chris) Nelson, Eric (Amanda) Lakey, Jeffery Martin and Jennifer (Greg) Adicks; nine great grandchildren, Makensi and Kendyl Nelson, Taeya, Kelani and Brody Lakey, Paley and Chance Adicks, Dixie (Tyler) Poland and Lana Martin; and one great great grandchild, Jaxon Poland. Mr. Lakey served in the Navy during World War II as a First Class Seaman upon the USS Riddle DE-185. On April 12, 1945 two Kamikazes attacked the Riddle, an event he never forgot and could vividly recall. One plane struck the Riddle seriously injuring his buddy with whom he had recently traded positions. The crew shot down the other plane which crashed near the ship, killing one sailor. The USS Riddle earned twelve battle stars for its service in the Pacific campaign at Okinawa, Iwo Jima and the Philippines. Mr. Lakey will be laid to rest with his wife in a private ceremony at the Albert G. Shirley was born on May 27, 1938, to the late Frank James Brooks and the late Lillie Oakes Brooks Clark. Shirley worked many years at Dan River Mills, Inc. She was a Christian and a member of Whitmell Christian Church. She lived most of her life here in Pittsylvania County. She was a ray of sunshine to everyone she met and always had a smile on her face. She loved playing cards, dancing, and spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Wayne Wallace; sons, Jerry Worley (Marsha), Danny Worley (Debbie), and Randy Worley (Jean); daughter, Diane W. Gosnay (Donald); grandchildren, Stephanie Bray (Rodney), Jessica Arendall (Tommy), Tray Gosnay (Jordan), Dillan Gosnay (Ally), Cassie Worley (Nick), Adam Worley (Jessica), and Kevin Worley; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Hatchett, and Ruby Foster; and brothers, Alvin Reece Brooks and William “Billy” Brooks. Virginia is survived by her son and daughter in law, John and Angela Norville of Roanoke, VA; three grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, and Jamie (Lauren); five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jaelyn, Sidney, Peyton, Carson; Sister and brother in law, Linda and Billy LaPrade; Brother and sister in law, Roy and Donna Pugh; Sister in law and best friend, Elizabeth “Liz” Chilton; Brother in law and sister in law, Ronnie and Sherry Norville; numerous nieces and nephews whom she adored, and her beloved pup Tessa. Virginia was a woman of true faith, she always put God first in everything she did. She was a dedicated member at Belmont Baptist Church for many years where she served as a choir member, secretary, and any other role that needed to be filled. She also volunteered a lot of her time at the church’s food bank. She loved being with her family and never missed a phone call or sending a card for birthday’s or special occasions. She only had kind words for others and was always there when friends or family needed her. Loved working in her yard and rocking on her porch reading her Bible.
