Herman Clinton Houchins was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2 He was born on September 12, 1910 at Page, Fayette Co., West Virginia.3,5 He married Lorene Jones on May 29, 1932 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2,6,5,7 Herman Clinton Houchins died on February 7, 1948 at Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 37.2,5 He Herman C. Houchins, 37, died at 3 p.m. yesterday of a self-inflicted wound at his home, 917 Neville Street, said police. Officers, who were called immediately, said Houchins was alone in the house at the time with his eldest son, Herman C. Houchins, Jr., and had asked the youth to bring him some paper on which to write a letter. The youth, police said, brought the writing paper and retired to the bathroom where he heard the shot fro a .32 caliber pistol. He called the police immediately. Effects found on the dead man’s person included a note enclosedin a check, asking the youth to go to the bank, cash the check, and give the money to Mrs. Houchins. Whether this note was the one Houchins wrote before the tragedy could not be learned. According to members of his family, Houchins had not been well for about one year and had been despondent lately. His wife, Mrs. Loraine Jones Houchins, and the two younger children, Allen Marshall, 7, and Mary Ellen, 5, were in Orlando, Fla., at the time of the death. Mrs. Houchins had taken them there on advice of physicians, who said they were suffering from Bright’s Disease. She and the two children were enroute home by airplane last night. According to representatives of the Keyser Funeral Home, where the body was taken, the bullet entered the body at the temple. Houchins was owner of the Farm Market, 100 South Oakwood Avenue, and formerly had been connected with the Department of Public Assistance, Beckley office. He was born Sept. 12, 1910, at Page, and was a member of the First Christian Church. Survivors, in addition to his wife and children, include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Houchins, 108 Ford Street; one brother, Woodward W. Houchins, of Alexandria, Va; and one sister, Mrs. Floyd Hayes, of Nichols, S.C. on February 8, 1948.5
