She was the beloved wife for 60+ years to James A Surratt. Mary graduated from McComas High School in 1950 and entered Concord College to pursue a degree in music. She met an upper classman, Jim Surratt from Coalwood, West Virginia and they were married three years later. She received her B.S. Degree in music in 1954 and joined Jim in Columbia, South Carolina where he was stationed with the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. They had their first of five daughters while in Columbia. Her parents Garland C. Elmore and Helen Sutherland Elmore of Athens, W.Va. preceded her in death. Mary, like her mother and her four siblings was an educator. Mary received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education at Butler University in Indianapolis and an additional Certificate in Special Education at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She retired from teaching in 2004 and suffered a massive stroke while exercising in 2005. Her sisters, Thelma Diachenko of Louisville, Ky., Martha Daniel of Logan, West Va. and brother Dr. Garland C. Elmore of Zionsville, In. have survived her. Her sister Nancy Farley of Athens, W.Va. preceded her in death. Mary's daughters H. Carole Bradley of Carmel, Indiana, Linda Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nancy Holand of Ft Wayne, Indiana, Susan Runion of Mason, Ohio and Julie Ahlrichs of Indianapolis, Indiana considered their Mother as their role model and miss her very much. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives. In addition to her profession as an outstanding teacher, Mary was a hospital volunteer and a trained Hospice volunteer. She was also very active in her church, A Celebration of Life was held for Mary on March 15th in Cincinnati. A Celebration of Life and the Internment will be held at the Roselawn Funeral Home and Cemetery in Princeton. on June 8, 2014.⁵

Born Oct. 10, 1935 at McComas, she was the daughter of the late Garland C. Elmore Sr. and Helen Mable Sutherland Elmore. She was previously married to Oscar R. Farley Sr. with whom she had their four children. Ms. Elmore was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church in Athens where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, assisted in the nursery and was a member of the Martha Pollack Circle. She was a graduate of Athens High School and Concord College. She received her master’s degree in safety education from Marshall University. She was an elementary school teacher for many schools in the area including Lashmeet and Athens and retired from Knob Elementary in Princeton in 1998. ‘Miss Nancy’s’ dedication to education after retirement was demonstrated by her loving commitment to students in need, whom she voluntarily mentored and tutored in her home. She received the Outstanding Citizenship Award in Athens in 2001. Survivors include four children, Frances Elizabeth (Beth) Farley Walker Gillespie and husband, Jerry of Richlands, Va., Oscar Patrick Farley Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Thelma Allene Farley and partner, Donna Crisco Cox of Green Valley, and Bryan Allen Farley and wife, Jacki of Athens; three sisters, Mary F. Surratt and husband, Jim of Cincinnati, Ohio, Thelma J. Diachenko and husband, Nick of Arcadia, N.C., and Martha J. Daniel of Logan; one brother, Garland Craft Elmore Jr. and wife, Jean of Zionsville, Ind; and ten grandchildren, Andy, Ryan, Jacob, Justin, Mattie, Zachary, Alex, Larry, Dutch and Elizabeth. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. on June 22, 2003.⁴

     James Arthur Surrat was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Courthouse Road, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.⁴ He was born on May 19, 1931 at Coalwood, McDowell Co., West Virginia.^1,5 He married Mary Frances Elmore, daughter of Garland Craft Elmore and Helen Mabel Sutherland, on September 26, 1953 at Athens, Mercer Co., West Virginia.^1,6,2,7 James Arthur Surrat died on February 24, 2021 at Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 89.² He James A. Surratt, 89, of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away on February 24, 2021. James leaves behind his four daughters, Carole (Mark) Bradley, Linda (Brad) Justice, Nancy (Russ) Holland and Susan (Lance) Runion, and son-in-law Steve Ahlrichs. He was the loving grandfather of Matthew, Steven, Kassia, Amanda, Ryan, Zachary, Meredith and Eric. He was known as great-grandpa Jim by Kai; great granddaughter, Paisley, is due to arrive late April. James A. was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 60 years, Mary (nee Elmore), and youngest daughter, Julie, as well as his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Jim served in the U.S. Army, 101st Airborne Division, from 1953-1955. He went on to work over 30 years for The Kroger Company. After retiring from Kroger he worked for Gates McDonald, as well as the Clermont County Chamber of Commerce. on March 11, 2021.²

Julie was born in Ann Arbor, MI on September 11, 1965 to James Arthur and Mary Francis (Elmore) Surratt. Julie graduated from IU School of Nursing in 1989. She was a registered nurse where she worked in the hospital field for 28 years before she became a clinical business manager for Johnson & Johnson until January of 2017. She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and was a very active member of the Brown Co. girls club. Julie was preceded in death by her mother Mary F. Surratt. Burial: Washington Park North Cemetery. Julie is survived by her husband Steven Joseph Ahlrichs, sons; Steven II and Ryan Ahlrichs, her father James A. Surratt and her 4 sisters; Carole Bradley, Linda Justice, Nancy Holland and Susan Runion and 14 nieces and nephews. on August 9, 2017.³

     Steven Joseph Ahlrichs was buried at Washington Park North Cemetery, 2702 Kessler Boulevard, W. Drive, Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana.² He was born on January 31, 1966.² He married Julie Ann Surrat, daughter of James Arthur Surrat and Mary Frances Elmore, on June 10, 1989.^1,2,3 Steven Joseph Ahlrichs died on December 31, 2021 at Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at age 55.² He Indianapolis – Steven Joseph Ahlrichs, 55, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, December 31, 2021. He was born on January 31, 1966, to his parents, Gary and Shirley Ahlrichs. He was a graduate of Cathedral High School and Xavier University. He met the love of his life, Julie Surratt, while they were counselors at a camp for diabetic children. They were married in 1989 and had two wonderful sons, Steven and Ryan. In his early career, he worked in sales, but his favorite job was being Safari Steve for Silly Safaris. He also enjoyed working at St. Monica School. He was an amazing son, brother, and friend. He was a lover of the outdoors and an active volunteer. He devoted his time to Camp Nathanael, the Boy Scouts, and as a tutor at New Era Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie, in 2017. He is survived by his sons, Steven (Rebecca) of Denver, CO, and Ryan of Los Angeles, CA, parents, Gary and Shirley, siblings, Mike of Indianapolis, Julie (Chris) of Cincinnati, OH, Jennifer (Peter) of Loveland, OH, and Tim of Indianapolis. Also, his devoted friend, Lisa Savin, as well as many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and friends. Burial will immediately follow at Washington Park North Cemetery. on January 7, 2022.²
