She was the beloved wife for 60+ years to James A Surratt. Mary graduated from McComas High School in 1950 and entered Concord College to pursue a degree in music. She met an upper classman, Jim Surratt from Coalwood, West Virginia and they were married three years later. She received her B.S. Degree in music in 1954 and joined Jim in Columbia, South Carolina where he was stationed with the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. They had their first of five daughters while in Columbia. Her parents Garland C. Elmore and Helen Sutherland Elmore of Athens, W.Va. preceded her in death. Mary, like her mother and her four siblings was an educator. Mary received her Masters Degree in Elementary Education at Butler University in Indianapolis and an additional Certificate in Special Education at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. She retired from teaching in 2004 and suffered a massive stroke while exercising in 2005. Her sisters, Thelma Diachenko of Louisville, Ky., Martha Daniel of Logan, West Va. and brother Dr. Garland C. Elmore of Zionsville, In. have survived her. Her sister Nancy Farley of Athens, W.Va. preceded her in death. Mary's daughters H. Carole Bradley of Carmel, Indiana, Linda Brown of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nancy Holand of Ft Wayne, Indiana, Susan Runion of Mason, Ohio and Julie Ahlrichs of Indianapolis, Indiana considered their Mother as their role model and miss her very much. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and numerous friends and relatives. In addition to her profession as an outstanding teacher, Mary was a hospital volunteer and a trained Hospice volunteer. She was also very active in her church, A Celebration of Life was held for Mary on March 15th in Cincinnati. A Celebration of Life and the Internment will be held at the Roselawn Funeral Home and Cemetery in Princeton. on June 8, 2014.5

Ms. Elmore was a member of the Concord United Methodist Church in Athens where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, assisted in the nursery and was a member of the Martha Pollack Circle. She was a graduate of Athens High School and Concord College. She received her master’s degree in safety education from Marshall University. She was an elementary school teacher for many schools in the area including Lashmeet and Athens and retired from Knob Elementary in Princeton in 1998. ‘Miss Nancy’s’ dedication to education after retirement was demonstrated by her loving commitment to students in need, whom she voluntarily mentored and tutored in her home. She received the Outstanding Citizenship Award in Athens in 2001. Survivors include four children, Frances Elizabeth (Beth) Farley Walker Gillespie and husband, Jerry of Richlands, Va., Oscar Patrick Farley Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Thelma Allene Farley and partner, Donna Crisco Cox of Green Valley, and Bryan Allen Farley and wife, Jacki of Athens; three sisters, Mary F. Surratt and husband, Jim of Cincinnati, Ohio, Thelma J. Diachenko and husband, Nick of Arcadia, N.C., and Martha J. Daniel of Logan; one brother, Garland Craft Elmore Jr. and wife, Jean of Zionsville, Ind; and ten grandchildren, Andy, Ryan, Jacob, Justin, Mattie, Zachary, Alex, Larry, Dutch and Elizabeth. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. on June 22, 2003.4

He is survived by his sons, Steven (Rebecca) of Denver, CO, and Ryan of Los Angeles, CA, parents, Gary and Shirley, siblings, Mike of Indianapolis, Julie (Chris) of Cincinnati, OH, Jennifer (Peter) of Loveland, OH, and Tim of Indianapolis. Also, his devoted friend, Lisa Savin, as well as many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and friends. Burial will immediately follow at Washington Park North Cemetery. on January 7, 2022.2
