Jones, a botanist and author of “The Flora of the Texas Coastal Bend,” died Tuesday after a long illness. He was 85. Jones, who was born in Gregory in 1909, grew up on a cotton form near Taft. While working toward a doctorate degree in history at Cornell University, Jones turned his attention toward botany. He also took over the family farm and became a cotton farmer. Ruth O’Brien, a plant taxonomy professor at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said Tuesday that Jones was an unassuming man with a quiet sense of humor and genuine love for botany and collecting specimens of wild and native plants of the Coastal Bend. “He started as a hobby... and it turned into an occupation,” O’Brien said of Jones’ love for studying and learning about plants. In 1992 the plant collection at the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History was renamed the Fred B. Jones Herbarium in honor of Jones’ donation of more than 2500 plant specimens since the early 1970s. An 11.5-acre plot near Portland, which Jones donated to the Corpus Christi Outdoor Club, also bears the botanist’s name - the Fred B. Jones Nature Sanctuary. Jones' wife, Emma, said that her husband donated the land in 1992 because he couldn’t stand the thought of putting the area under concrete. The sanctuary is home to at least 173 varieties of plants and is probably best known as a prime birding spot. Jones, who worked as a botanist with the Welder Wildlife Foundation, published several short papers in horticultural and botanical journals and co-authored a checklist of “Flowering Plants and Ferns of the Texas Coastal Bend Counties,” published in 1961. That same year he received the William Herbert Medal from the American Amaryllis Society fix his work on rain lilies. His major work, the book “The Flora of the Texas Coastal Bend,” was published in 1975 and is considered the definitive book on Coastal Bend plant life. The floral collections on which the book is based are in the herbaria of the Welder Wildlife Foundation Southern Methodist University and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. on July 5, 1995.6

She was born on September 13, 1927, one of nine children of Charles and Lena Lee. Her earliest years were spent in Karns, Tennessee. Then the family moved to Fountain City, finally settling in Knoxville in the 1940's. She attended Fountain City High School, where she excelled as a student and enjoyed a number of activities, including bowling and cheerleading. After graduation in 1945 she enrolled in Hiwassee College where she was an outstanding student and was selected as one of five college beauties. While working in the dining hall at Hiwassee as a work scholarship student she met Bill Carter, from Slant, Virginia, who was in the same program. They dated throughout their years at Hiwassee and became engaged during their final months. During that time, she participated in his decision to enter the Methodist Ministry, and supported him in his preparation. In 1947 she returned to Knoxville and took a job, while Bill moved to Emory and Henry College, to complete his preministerial studies. They were married on June 6, 1948 and lived at Emory, VA together until 1949, when they moved to Norton, Virginia, where he was associate pastor of Norton Methodist Church and pastor of the West Norton Church. Their son, Michael Lee was born June 4, 1949 at Norton. In 1949 they moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Bill attended Vanderbilt University School of Religion, while serving a student appointment. They moved to Rose Hill Virginia in 1952, and served together there and in a number of United Methodist Churches in The Holston Conference (East Tennessee and SW Virginia), in which Belle took an active role, including leadership of youth classes in churches and participation in many community organizations, until moving to Johnson City in 1981 to take a position with the Holston Conference Council on Ministries Staff. They bought a house there and upon retirement in 1990 continued to live in Johnson City until her death. She is survived by her husband, Bill, and her son, Mike (who lives in Johnson City, and was a great resource during her final illness) as well as her beloved sister, Mary Irwin, in Knoxville, a younger brother, Roy, in Sweetwater, TN, and a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives throughout the country. on September 8, 2011.8

She was the youngest of seven girls and two boys born to the late Charles and Lena Lee of the Karns area. All sisters preceded her death and their names were Geneva, Sallie, Inez, Emma, Willie Mae, and Ora Bell. Her brother, Charles, preceded her death as well. The only remaining sibling is Roy Lee, of Sweetwater, and his wife Helen. And the only remaining brother-in-law is Reverend Bill Carter of Johnson City. She enjoyed reading, watching and identifying local birds, and arranging flowers as well as worrying about everyone else but herself. She was also an avid shopper as long as she could buy for others. Mary worked at Kress and Standard Knitting Mills in Downtown Knoxville in her younger years and then helped her husband at the family business, Irwin Dental Lab. When her husband became ill, she enjoyed her job helping customers at Fashion Bug. Mary lost her oldest son, Stephen Craig Dillinger (1980) and her husband, Kenneth E. Irwin (1990). She leaves fond memories in the hearts of many she touched through the years living in Cumberland Estates as the "Kool-Aid Mom" with the best grilled cheese sandwiches. When you visited her home, you sat anywhere you wanted and left with a full belly. She will be missed mostly by her youngest son, Ray Irwin and only daughter, Tina Harness. Her son-in-law, Scott Harness and grandchildren, Silas Harness and Sydney (Harness) Boatman and her husband Adam are blessed with many loving and funny memories of her. Her stepson, Keith Brewer, and his wife, Paulette and their children and grandchildren will cherish memories of her as well. The family wants to thank the staff at Westmoreland Health and Rehabilitation Facility for being her 2nd family for the last year and a half of her life. She liked to tell people she had the best room there. Mary Ann enjoyed her pretty view of yellow peonies and asked all the visitors to take a look when they were in bloom. She would want to thank the many special friends and family who came to visit her regularly. Rev. William J. "Billy" Carter1,2,3,4,5,6,7

M, b. June 27, 1928, d. March 8, 2022
Rev. William J. "Billy" Carter Reverend William J. Carter died March 8, 2022, at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City. Bill was born on June 27, 1928, at the family home on the banks of the Clinch River in the Slant community of Scott County, Virginia. Bill was predeceased by his parents Emmett Arlington and Orpha Louise Sturgill Carter; wife Belle Lee Carter; sister, Katie; brother, Danny, and son Michael Lee Carter. He is survived by his brother, Jimmy Carter (Anne); cousin Ed Carter, and honorary grandchildren, Emory Kate and Sam Brengle. At a young age, Bill moved to Idaho with his family to work on Uncle Bill's dairy farm. After several years, the family returned home and Bill completed high school at Dungannon where he was valedictorian of his class. He continued his education at Hiwassee College (AA), where he met the love of his life, Belle, to whom he was married 63 years. He earned a BA degree at Emory & Henry College, and later E&H awarded him a Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa. He had a truly wonderful experience at Emory & Henry, where he was encouraged to expand his writing skills by Professor Blaise. This led to his wish to bequeath his estate to E&H; his final resting place will be on the campus, along with Belle and Mike. His legacy at E&H will live on forever as he had a residence hall named after him in recognition of his generous philanthropic support. Bill earned a BD from Vanderbilt School of Religion where he was awarded the Founder's Medal for having the highest scholastic average achieved by any student in the School of Religion. He rounded out his education with an MA Degree in Counseling from the University of Tennessee. Bill dedicated his life to the Methodist Church and the Holston Conference, with forty years of active service. He pastored churches in Virginia including Norton- West Norton, Rose Hill, Wise, and Tazewell – Main Street. Churches in Tennessee include Elizabethton – First, Knoxville – Bearden, and Chattanooga – Brainerd. He served in many capacities, some being Abingdon District Superintendent, Specialist in Leadership Development, Lay, Clergy, and Director of Conference Council on Ministries, before his retirement in 1990. After retirement, he made Johnson City his home and joined the First United Methodist Church family. He later stepped up to pastor the church during a time of transition. The church has a prayer chapel dedicated in his name. Bill loved to travel and was an avid photographer of waterfalls. He made numerous trips with his friend, Don Gentry. For many years you could find Bill on the tennis court playing weekly with a great group of friends. He loved his tennis buddies, and they hated his back spin and short shots. When Bill wasn't on the courts, you could find him enjoying a good meal with friends, reading, or working on his next presentation or on his literary works. He authored several books that are still in print and numerous adult Bible studies for the United Methodist Church. Bill never met a stranger and was a natural leader. He was a kind person who had a great sense of humor and found enjoyment in every moment of life. He was amazing with children who were instantly drawn to him. He always managed to include Slant, Virginia in any sermon, presentation, or in conversation with anyone who would listen! He will be missed on this earth. A special thanks to NHC and their staff for the loving care provided to Bill, along with Caris Hospice, Donna Wilkinson for being an advocate for his care during his later years, and many friends at FUMC for their support.7 He was born on June 27, 1928 at Scott Co., Virginia.5,6,7 He married Ora Belle Lee, daughter of Charles Grant Lee and Vilena Ann "Lena" Conner, on June 6, 1948.1,7 Rev.
