Maxine is survived by her sons Jerry and Steve Reed of Des Moines; her brother, Jim VanDyke of Des Moines; her sister Ruth Grebiner of Chicago, and her sister Mary of Florida; eight grandchildren, Shawn Hager, Mechele Stroud, Meloney Reed, Traci Stumbo, Chris Spicer, Amy Reed, Mike Reed and Stephen Reed; twelve great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Minnie VanDyke; husband, Gerald; her brothers, Elmer, Robert and Larry; and her sisters, Jean and Betty. on March 30, 2008.2

Bill served in the Navy CB's during World War II and helped build airstrips in the South Pacific so the newspaper headlines could read "the Marines have landed." He was an employee of the Norfolk-Southern Railroad and was recently awarded a diamond pin for 60 years of service in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Bill was a member of the Cave Spring Lions Club serving as president for the year 1995 to 1996. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt of Calvary Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Dr. Marvin Barbre of Good Samaritan Hospice. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family would like to give special thanks to Roger King, of Home Instead Hospice, for his loving care and dedicated service to Bill during his months of illness. on August 7, 2010.3

On Saturday, May 21, 2022, we lost the glue to our extended family with the death of our Mom, Grandmom and GGMa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rebecca and Leroy Knibb; her husband, Bill Clinton Garner; her daughter, Julia Mallett; and her siblings, Leroy Knibb Jr. and Sara Lou Hancock. Barbara leaves behind three married daughters, Jennifer Wacenske (Bill), Rebecca Watts (Blake) and Cynthia Garger (Butch); and former son-in-law, Robert Mallett (Dianne); six grandchildren, Joshua Mallett (Annie), Amber Peterson (Josh), Eric Wacenske (Amanda), Emma Watts (Brian Jigarjian), Colin Watts, and Julia Watts; and four great-grandchildren, Robert and Virginia Mallett, and Alina and Aaron Wacenske. Barbara grew up during the depression and lived through World War II. She was a proud graduate of Jefferson High School, Class of 1945. Barbara was a modern woman for her generation, working outside of the home until as late as 2009 while raising her family. She loved interfacing with people and sharing stories, organizing Jefferson High School reunions, cooking and devising recipes, knitting, cross stitch, cross word puzzles, playing bridge and travels with her family. Barbara was philanthropic with her time in service to the Lions Club, Meals on Wheels, Good Samaritan Hospice, driving sick children and their families to medical facilities, and she experienced deep satisfaction in being a Democratic poll registrar for Roanoke County. We wish time spent with those we love could last forever, and in our hearts, it will. Interment will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. on June 10, 2022.4
