James Monroe Crutcher James "Jim" Monroe Crutcher Sr., Orofino, passed away Friday, April 15, 2011 from natural causes. He was 86. Jim was born Aug. 7, 1924 in Orofino to James Andrew and Mae Fern Crutcher. He graduated from Orofino High School in 1942 and was a member of Troupe No. 205 of the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society. He served in the Army in the Philippines during World War II from May 1943 through January 1946 and was awarded two Purple Hearts for being wounded in two separate engagements. After the war, Jim attended Kinman Business University in Spokane, WA and graduated in 1948 with a degree in accounting. He returned to the Orofino area and worked as a carpenter for local contractors, a bookkeeper for White Pine Planer and Ahsahka Mill and as a custodian for Orofino Elementary School. He also served as Quartermaster of VFW Post #3296 for a period of time. Jim married Betty Smolinski in September 1966 and celebrated 44 years of marriage. He was previously married to Tiny Williams and Loretta Keeney. In 1978, Jim and his brother Bill purchased the Oasis Bar and turned it into the "hottest bar in town." During the 25 years of ownership, many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were served for local patrons and friends and multiple fundraisers were held for people in need. An Oasis float was always seen in the parade during Lumberjack Days and there were several trophies on the wall for the Oasis dart, baseball, arm wrestling and billiard teams. Jim had a love of baseball and the only baseball team worth watching…"Go Yankees!" He also liked to travel with his beloved wife, Betty and his poodle, Angel, who was always at his side. They enjoyed many trips around the area and he was especially fond of Yellowstone National Park. Jim is survived by his wife, Betty, of Orofino; seven children, daughter Darlene Eisle, Montana, son Donald Pitcher, Orofino, daughter Bonnie and her husband Mark Buntin, Bolingbrook, IL, son Joe Crutcher, Greer, son Bill Crutcher and his wife Jan, Lewiston, daughter Susan and her husband Bill Harris, Peck, daughter Peggy Klamke, Quilcene, WA; brother William Crutcher, Walla Walla, WA; sister Mary Ellen Starkey, Lake Havasu City, AZ; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents James Andrew and Mae Fern Crutcher and his son James Monroe Crutcher Jr.3 He was born on August 27, 1924 at Orofino, Clearwater Co., Idaho.3,2 He married Betty Ann Smolinski, daughter of Alfred William Smolinski and Beatrice Evelyn Baker, on September 10, 1966 at Orofino, Clearwater Co., Idaho.1,3 James Monroe Crutcher died on April 15, 2011 at Orofino, Clearwater Co., Idaho, at age 86.3
