Lt. Col. John West Burgess John West deposed 10 Nov 1663 that he was aged 25 years or thereabouts. On 23 Dec 1650 he had been put in possession of 1600 acres in Northampton County which included the Herle tract. He was a carpenter and shipbuilder by trade and served Accomack County as commissioner, 1662-63, justice, 1663-1703, sheriff, 1667, and as captain, major and lieutenant colonel of militia, 1655-1703. He held 5250 acres in Accomack County, 1683. A patent issued to John West, 20 Oct 1661, for 250 acres in Northampton County recites that the land was granted to Matilda Scarburgh, 31 Mar 1655, and due said West as marrying with the said Scarburgh. His widow held 3600 acres in Accomack County, 1704 (Adventurers of Purse and Person, p. 663). For more on the descendants of Lt. Col. Col. Edmund Scarburgh was buried at Scarborough Graveyard (also known as Hedra Cottage Cemetery), Craddockville, Accomack Co., Virginia.2,1 He Edmund Scarburgh, baptized 2 Oct 1617, probably accompanied his parents to Virginia. He deposed 26 Oct 1653, aged about 34, that he had lived in Virginia 22 years, but was born in London and was a trader with New Amsterdam. He was a witness in the "Accawmack" Court, March 1633/4, to a deed of sale of two wild cows by his father. In addition to the patent granted him upon the death of his father, he received also on the same date, 28 Nov 1635, 200 acres on the seaboard side in Accomack which had also been assigned previously to his father. He rose rapidly to a place of prominence in Virginia, serving as Burgess from Northampton 1643, 1645-48, 1652, 1656, 1660-62, and from Accomack 1666-70, was speaker of the House of Burgessess, 1645, Surveyor General of Virginia, 1665-70, King's Collector of quit-rents, 1663, and justice and sheriff of Northampton County. Colonel Edmund Scarburgh engaged extensively in maritime shipping and was part or sole owner of several vessels. His most important enterprise was the extraction of salt from sea water by evaporation for which he obtained a monopoly on the Eastern Shore. In his capacity as captain of militia and later as commander-in-chief of forces on the Eastern Shore, he led a number of raids against Indians. His difficulties with them led him to harsh and unjust treatment of the savages, on which and other charges he was tried and by order of the General Court, 1670, he was suspended from "all offices as well as military and civil until by his future obedience and fidelity it shall please the Right Honorable the Governor to restore him." He has been called arrogant, contentious and power hungry and had made, in 1663, an unofficial effort to annex the Maryland settlements at Annemessex and Manokin (now Dorchester and Somerset Counties, Maryland) to Accomack County by moving a boundary point thirty miles to the north. His death was noted by Governor Sir William Berkeley, 1671, and on 23 May 1671 his son Charles and his sons-in-law John West and Devorax Browne were granted letters of administration of his estate in place of Mary Scarburgh, relict of Edmund. His estate was much involved and included land holdings in Virginia and Maryland variously estimated to be between 46,000 and 75,000 acres (Adventurers of Purse and Person, 3rd Ed, pp. 542-543). Devoras Browne was appointed administrator for Col. Edmund Scarburgh's estate in 1672, but there was no order of qualification (Acc Co Orders, 1671-1673(iv), p. 188).1 He was born in 1617 at St. Martin's in-the-Fields, London, England.1 He married Mary Cade? circa 1638 at Accomack Co., Virginia.1 Col. Capt. Edmund Scarburgh I Burgess1

Capt. Edmund Scarburgh I Burgess He was a Barrister. Captain Edmund Scarburgh lived for a time in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields parish, London. As requested in his father's will (5 Sep 1606) Edmund was admitted to Caius College, Cambridge, England, 15 Apr 1602 and remained at Caius College until he had taken the degree of barrister. Jennings Cropper Wise reported that he came to Virginia for the first time about 1620, leaving his family in England. However no proof of this has been found. By 1628-29 he had settled with his family on Magothy Bay on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he was a Commissioner for the Plantation of Accomack in 1631 and represented Accomack in the House of Burgesses in 1629, 1631, and 1632, and was presiding Commissioner of the first court held in Accomack County in 1632 and served until his death. He died intestate after 17 April 1634, the last time he served as a member of the Accomack Court, and prior to 9 January 1635, when Hannah Scarburgh, "widow," sold cattle to Captain Thomas Graves (Ames, Mears & Allied Lines, pp. 345-346). His wife Hannah "Scarborough" was also referred to as a widow on 19 Feb 1634/5 (N'hamp Orders, Wills, Deeds, etc, f. 48).1 He was born in 1584 at North Walsham, County Norfolk, England.1 He married Hannah "Anna" Smith, daughter of Rev.
