Four others injured, one critically, when automobile crashes into shifter engine on branch line. A McDowell county father, mother and their 2-year-old son were killed and four other persons were injured, one critically, shortly after 7 o’clock last night when the auto in which they were riding crashed into a shifter engine operating on the Simmons branch line to the Buckeye Coal and Coke comapny operation about 1 mile west of Simmons. The dead are Lawnie Steele, 24, of Keystone; Mrs. Lawnie Steele, 20 and Cecil Steele, their 2-year-old son. The injured are Earl Steele, aged, 3, son of the dead man and wife; Edith Jones, 17, of Northfork, sister of Mrs. Steele; G. T. Steele, of Northfork, brother of Lawnie Steele, and Mary Combs, 18, of Northfork, daughter of Floyd Combs. Physicians at St. Luke's hospiatl said the Combs girl has little chance for recovery. She sustained puncture of both lungs, a fractured skull, broken arm, leg and back injuries. She had not regained consciousness last midnight, and had been in an oxygen tent since her arrival at the South Bluefield hospital. The dead and injured persons were returning home from Christiansburg, Va. where they attended funeral services yesterday afternoon for the father of Mrs. Steel and Edith Jones. The accident occurred past a hook curve on Route 52 between Simmons and Maybeury . Witnesses said the auto, a Plymouth sedan driven by Lawnie Steele, crashed into and partially ran under the tender of the shifter engine, and was knocked a distance of fifty feet before it came to a stop . The car was totally wrecked. Mary Combs, one of the dead, was thrown clear of the spinning auto a distance of about twenty feet in to a ditch. Passersby rushed all seven occupants of the auto to Bluefield hospitals. All except Mary Combs were brought to Bluefied sanitarium; she to St. Luke's hospital. Cecil Steele, the two-years-old baby, was dead upon arrival. His mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Lawnie Steele, died one and two hours apart respectively. G. G. Steele, 19, brother of the dead man, sustained fractures of the leg and body and head abrssions. He was employed until recently by A. R. Thompson, lumber contractor of Northfork, who also employed Lawnie Steele. Edith Jones received fractures of the thigh, a broken nose and face lacerations. Earl Steele, 3, sustained possible fractured skull, shoulder and abdominal injuries. Physicians at Bluefleld sanitarium, where all three are patients, said their chances for recovery are good. Lawnie Steele died of chest injuries, fractured hip, deep lacerations of the forehead, probable fractured skull and body lacerations. His wife died of a fractured skull, broken left arm, right wrist and left thigh, body and face lacerations and shock. Cecil Steele, the 2-years-old baby probably died of skull fracture, physicians said. The engine, Norfolk and Western officials said last night, was backing across the highway when the crash occurred. Engineer George Lavinder Conductor Leo J. Long said that the locomotive tender was equipped with a powferful headlamp and that whistle and bell signals were made as the locomotive approached and crossed the roadway. A standard crossing warning stands at the crossing. The train, Norfolk and Western officials said was moving at a rate of speed of about 10 miles per hour. The Steele car, it was reported, was travelling at a high rate of speed. Funeral arrangements for the dead have not been made. The bodies were taken late last night to Northfork Funeral home. on November 2, 1940.6

William Joseph "Bill" Lineberry1,2,3
M, b. February 25, 1962, d. December 23, 2020
William Joseph "Bill" Lineberry William "Bill" Lineberry, Dec 23, 2020. To put Bill Lineberry's life into a short description is an impossible task, but we can try our best to memorialize this remarkable man on this page. For many he was the warmest, most loving, approachable man they have ever met. Always kind, and generous. Patient and accepting of all people, who truly felt empathy for everyone. Born in Columbus Ohio, and growing up in Reynoldsburg Ohio, he made many lasting friendships that exist to this day. He was pre-deceased by his parents Richard and Dorothy Lineberry, and his sisters Rebecca Miao and Bernice Mendes. Bill proudly served his nation in the Navy with distinction for 21 years, becoming Chief Petty Officer, a position he was fiercely proud of. A very patriotic man he was proud of his service and would do anything for his country. After moving around the country for the Navy, Bill settled in the Atlanta metro area since 2003. The only regret from his time in the service was not seeing his 3 girls when he had to go out to sea. He would talk about the moments in his girls lives he wished he did not miss, and he would say how happy he was able to see his girls often now that they were adults and spend time with their families. Just being around them for holidays, cookouts, and vacations was the happiest times of his life. He fell in love for a second time in his middle years and married the girl he called "the love of his life", living together for 10 years and having a child together. He often said how thankful he could have a chance to be a new father again and be with his son everyday and watch him grow up, and not miss the moments he missed with his older daughters. He was young, energetic, and healthy still, with many years ahead of him, if it were not for Covid. He wanted to teach his grandson Jeremiah how to drive. He wanted the opportunity to see his next daughter get married. He wanted to be at his son's 5th birthday party in January and give him the present he helped pick out. He wanted to take his family on a large vacation again in the summer to celebrate his Bachelor's degree he just earned the same month that Covid took his life. We can spend time talking about different interests he had like gardening, football, and golf, or his work as a controls engineer, but beyond measure to Bill the most important thing in his life was his beloved family. He is survived by his adoring wife Mere Ann Lineberry, his loving children are Jennifer Lineberry and her wife Laura Lineberry, Christina Lineberry her fiancé Garrett Myers and her children Connor, Corbin, and Callie Bartley, his daughter Mekana Lineberry and her children Jeremiah Lineberry, Ava-Mekena Kihara, and Zion Thumari, his stepdaughter Sara Martinez, and his son William Lineberry, that everyone lovingly calls Liam. All these children and grandchildren he loved equally and with his full open heart. In addition, he is survived by his wonderful sisters Marian Bush and her husband Roger and Frances Lineberry, along with many nieces and nephews whom he cared for. Bill was one of the smartest people you could meet, funny, outgoing, and a light in his family's life and the life of his friends. Not an especially religious man, he did believe in something more to this universe beyond life. Wherever beautiful souls go, when they pass from this earth is where Bill Lineberry will be, waiting for all of his loving family to one day be reunited with him again. His ashes will be interred in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.4 He was buried at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Cherokee Co., Georgia.3,4 He was born on February 25, 1962 at Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio.3,4 He married Cynthia Lou "Cindy" Quesenberry, daughter of William Mackey Quesenberry and Patricia Frances Jones, on March 27, 1982 at Franklin Co., Ohio.1,2 William Joseph "Bill" Lineberry and Cynthia Lou "Cindy" Quesenberry were divorced on December 10, 2012 at Ohio.5 William Joseph "Bill" Lineberry died on December 23, 2020 at Georgia at age 58.3,4
