     Ethel Iola Slagel Ethel Iola, four month old daughter of Garl and Ruth Slagel died at 6:45 p.m. at the home of the parents on Condit Street. The baby had been ailing four days and was seriously ill one day. Surviving are the parents, a half brother James Nicholson; two grandmothers Mrs. Lulu Bragg and Mrs Mercy Hartley, and a step- grandfather, Charles Bragg, all of Roanoke; two great-grandmothers Mrs. Rebecca Martens of Roanoke and Mrs. Tatilda Jane Hartley of Millersburg, Michigan; and a great-grandfather Monroe Slagel of this city. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery on the Old Roanoke Road. The Rev. J.W. Born December 10, 1933, at Kirby Mt., he was the son of the late Elijah Lee "Bruce" and Eliza Jane Smith. A former timberman, logger, carpenter, mason, mechanic and machinist, he enjoyed hunting, outdoors, playing music with his family and spending time with his family and friends. He was of the Baptist Faith and was baptized by the late John Walker. Preceded in death by his son, Ernest Lee "Ernie" Smith; one grandson, Dee Cee Cochran; and several brothers and sisters. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Claudia Blevins Smith of Kirby Mt; three children, Wilford David Smith of Indiana, Victoria Smith Kesler and husband John David of Kirby Mt. and Wilford Smith Jr. and wife Sybil of Kirby Mt; seven grandchildren, Dalton Elijah Lee Smith, Kristen Cales, Ariel Smith, Riley McKee, Eli Smith, Jossie Smith and Shenandoah Cochran; six great grandchildren, Juliette, Shenabelle, Daniel III, Caroline, Anna Marie and Tipton; two sisters, Clara Persinger of Princeton and Leota Cantley of Lowell; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at the Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel with Pastor Roger Persinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Clayton Baptist Church Cemetery. on November 21, 2016.1
