Robert was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Keokuk, the son of Charles and Alice Slater Johnson. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1944. On March 2, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Lee Swain at the United Methodist Church in Carthage. Robert was an active member of the church, serving as Sunday school teacher for many years and also as a certified lay minister in Carthage and other surrounding churches. He was active in the local schools serving on the board for more than 20 years, many of those as board president. He was instrumental in getting the school cafeteria built. Robert helped build the 4-H barns in Carthage and served on the Farm Bureau board for many years. He was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed working with animals. He also had worked as a carpenter with Roger Turner and as a mail carrier during the Christmas season. Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Johnson of Carthage; three children, Patty (Michael) Wiegers of Lewistown, Ill., Linda Sue Johnson of Carthage and Roger (Linda L.) Johnson of Albany, Ill; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Larry Edward Johnson; three half-sisters; and a half-brother. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Carthage, with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. on November 12, 2015.3

On March 2, 1947, she was united in marriage with Robert Johnson at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage. He preceded her in death in 2015. Mary Lee had worked at the school and church as a secretary and was also well known in the area for her skills as a seamstress. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage. Mary is survived by three children, Roger (Linda) Johnson of Albany, Ill., Linda Sue Johnson of Carthage, and Patty (Michael) Wiegers of Lewistown, Ill; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Johnson of Jefferson, Wis; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, Larry Edward Johnson; and brother, William Swain. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at First United Methodist Church in Carthage, with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. on February 20, 2020.3
