Joel Rousseau Belknap1,2,3,4,5

M, b. June 20, 1888, d. March 13, 1958
Joel Rousseau Belknap was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.5 He was born on June 20, 1888 at Scottsville, Pope Co., Arkansas.2,3 He married Frances Grace "Fannie" Sutton, daughter of Elmer Laughlin Sutton and Cora Anna Hall, on December 14, 1950 at Orange Co., Florida.1 Joel Rousseau Belknap died on March 13, 1958 at Miami, Dade Co., Florida, at age 69.4,5 He Joel R. Belknap, 69, prominent Kanawha County inventor and president and founder of Fuel Process Company, died last night in a Miami, Florida hospital of complications following an operation in December. Mr. Belknap, widely-known in the coal industry, resided on Coal River, but spent the winters in Florida. His process company is located at 900 D Street, South Charleston, and an additional shop is in St. Albans. Mr. Belknap was the inventor of the Belknap Calcium Chloride Coal Washer, widely used in this state, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Illinois. He designed this washer about 20 years ago, just after he had developed a coal washing solution. This solution was manufactured at his plant in South Charleston and the washer itself was manufactured by Kanawha Manufacturing Company here in Charleston. Although the washer was the most prominent of his inventions, along with the solution, he has also invented a railroad car axle journal bearing and a hydraulic scale, both of which have been patented, but not developed for commercial sale as yet. Mr. Belknap came to Charleston shortly after 1930 when he became interested in the car industry here. About that time, he developed his process for treating coal with calcium chloride in allay the dust and freeze proof it. As a result of this and his contact with the mines, in this area, he became interested in developing a small, inexpensive type coal washer. In 1935 he invented the now famous Belknap Coal Washer, and it was patented in 1939. Over 175 installations of this and other developments of the washer have been used in mines since that time. His fuel process company here in Kanawha County employs some 40 people, and it is the only one of its type in this state. An avid fighter of communism, Mr. Belknap was executive director of the West Virginia Free Enterprise Association, an organization he founded here about 10 years ago. It is dedicated to the promotion of free enterprise in this state and throughout the area. In connection with this association, he founded about 8 years ago, a monthly publication called "The Alarm". As editor of this publication, circulated throughout the nation with some 2,000 to 3,000 subscribers, he exposed different aspects of Communism in the United States. It was published by a South Charleston printing concern. Mr. Belknap was a director of the National Bank of Commerce and a member of the South Charleston Civitan Club. He was a registered, professional mechanical and chemical engineer, and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas College of Engineering. Survivors include his wife, of Coal River and Tavernier, Florida; a daughter, Mrs. June Deck of Winter Park, Florida; a brother, R. L. of Chicago, Illinois; and two sisters, Mrs. Austin Burt of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Mrs. R. L. Beckman of Oak Park, Illinois; and seven grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in South Charleston. on March 14, 1958.5
