George Clarence Spoerl1,2,3
M, b. October 24, 1918, d. November 9, 2001
George Clarence Spoerl was buried at Highland Memory Gardens, 3054 County Road BB, Cottage Grove, Dane Co., Wisconsin.1,4,5 He was born on October 24, 1918 at Madison, Dane Co., Wisconsin.1,5,4,6,2,3 He married Virginia Agnes Harding, daughter of John Milton Harding and Mary Agnes Menkin/Memke, on February 14, 1947 at Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas.1,3 George Clarence Spoerl died on November 9, 2001 at Wisconsin at age 83.1,3 He Come to Me all who are weary and I will give you rest. George Clarence Spoerl found his eternal rest in the Lord on Nov. 8, 2001. He was born the third son of John and Anna (Stitgen) Spoerl on Oct. 24, 1918, in Madison, Wis. George graduated from East High School and then attended UW-Stout college. In 1942, he answered the call to patriotism and joined the army to serve his country during World War II. It was during that time that George met and married the love of his life, Virginia (Harding) Spoerl, on Feb. 14, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan. After living in Kansas for about three years, they relocated to Madison, Wis. It was there, on the east side of town, that George and Virginia proudly raised their nine children. Together they opened their hearts to numerous foster children, showing them the true meaning of family love. George spent his entire life in quiet dignity, caring as only a father can for the welfare of his family. He worked hard as a union master carpenter for a number of companies, retiring from MilVanders Inc. in 1980. Family and friends alike delighted in his wooden creations, from puzzles to furniture, each crafted with love. George enjoyed a good practical joke as both the player and recipient. He always looked for an opportunity to make someone laugh and, at the same time, was there as a solid shoulder to lean on, offering care and support. He was one of the founding members of St. Dennis parish, active in the Holy Name Society, participating in its annual festivals and again, lending his talent as a craftsman to give beauty to the new church. As his health declined, George relocated to Wyocena Health Care Center where he was lovingly cared for by the staff on Evergreen and Almond Avenue. George is survived by his wife and sweetheart, Virginia; and his brood of kids, Mary of Tucson, Ariz., Frank (Nichola) of DesMoines, Iowa; Faith (Alan) Vangen of Rio, Wis; Mike (Mary Malaney), Ruth (John Cox III) DiCristina, Dennis (Renee), all of Madison, Wis., Paul (Judy) of Greenville, Wis., John (Tammy) of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., and Debbie (David) Leising of Randolph, Wis. George was the loving Grandpa of Becci, Erin, Elite, Abbie, Nick, Man, Angie, J.C, Thomas, Samantha, Cassandra, John, Robert, Brooke, Emily, and Eli. He was also a proud great-grandpa to Emily, Jacob, and Jared. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Edward (Susan) Spoerl; his sister-in-law, MaryEllen Spoerl; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Albert; and his sister, Josephine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, 505 Dempsey Road, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Dr., and also from 10 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. Dennis Catholic Church. Anyone can be a father but it takes someone special to be a daddy. on November 11, 2001.3

F, b. March 6, 1923, d. June 11, 2017
Velma Grace Bowdre Velma Grace Harding, 94, of Gladstone, Missouri passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2017. She was born on March 6, 1923 in Princeton, MO. She was the 2nd oldest of 8 children born to her loving parents, Mary Elizabeth (Koch) and Charles Edgar Bowdre. Velma grew up in Kansas City, Kansas. One day, while she was washing the dishes, Marion Harding came by her house to pick up her brother for a baseball game. While he was walking through the house, he saw Velma and thought she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen! Instead of going to the baseball game, he picked up a towel and started drying the dishes. He spent the next long six months pleading for a date before Velma’s best friend, Frances, convinced her to go to the theatre with him. Not long after, on the 22nd of July 1940, Velma and Marion were married. Together, Velma and Marion had 5 children whom they raised in Kansas City, Kansas. In the early 90s, Velma and Marion moved to Gladstone, Missouri where they spent 25 happy years. Velma was a charter member of Oak Grove Christian Church in Kansas City when it was founded in 1969, and a deaconess therein. She was always very active in the church and loved doing whatever she could to serve God there. She also loved to cook, spend time with her family, listen to any kind of music and to go bowling- if she could choose between bowling and eating, she would always rather bowl! Velma was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and one son, Crist Harding. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, Marion Harding; 4 children: Pat (Tim) Rhoades, Joyce (Tom) Janssen, Sandy (Roy) Clogston, and Keith Harding. Also, her daughter-in-law, Sheila; 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed. The family would like to especially thank her caregiver, Carol Hartman who took such good care of her when her health started failing, and also Pastor Helen Nelson, for providing spiritual guidance and loving kindness for as long as she knew her.2 She was buried at Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas.3 She was born on March 6, 1923 at Princeton, Mercer Co., Missouri.2 As of July 22, 1940,her married name was Harding.1 She married Marion Harding, son of John Milton Harding and Mary Agnes Menkin/Memke, on July 22, 1940.1,2 Velma Grace Bowdre died on June 11, 2017 at Gladstone, Clay Co., Missouri, at age 94.2
