Mamie was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She raised her four children by herself. She was brave and true and she is their hero. She retired from R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with thirty-one years of service. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by the father of her children, Walter Thomas Cooper, and by her two brothers, Kermit and Emmett Dixon. Surviving are four children, Frances Jean Scott of Walkertown, Kenneth Cooper of Radford, Va., Betty Yokeley of High Point, and Bonnie Sue Cummings of Belews Creek; a devoted sister and brother, Bessie Wilson of Winston-Salem and Charlie Dixon of Ferrum, Va. Twelve grandchildren, and four of them who especially cared for her during Ma-Maws illness, Keith Scott, Sally Clark, April Ramey, and Jenny I. Fulton; and twenty great-grandchildren, and Suzie her Eskimo Spitz she loved dearly, that protected her to the end. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, August 13, 2007 at Fountain of Life Lutheran Church in Kernersville by Pastor Keith Speaks. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. on August 12, 2007.⁵

     Thelma Reba Sampson Thelma Sampson Motley, 86, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at Blue Ridge Health and Rehab. She was born June 25, 1932, to the late James William and Viola Harden Sampson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Buford Cooper, her second husband, Robert Motley; two sisters, and six brothers. Mrs. Motley had a green thumb, was a Girl Scout leader and a staunch supporter of Bassett High School Band Boosters and Football Boosters. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Cooper Shires and Gloria J. Cooper Dillon Fowler; one son, Brady William Cooper, Sr; one sister, Frances Christian; six grandchildren, Brady Cooper, Jr., Kevin Cooper, Scott Shires, Terri Shires Toler, Sara Dillion Moore, and Kelly Fowler and seven great-grandchildren, Eliza Cooper, Olivia Cooper, Emma Shires, Chloe Toler, Kaileigh Toler, Phoenix Moore, and Helena Utter Fowler. A memorial service will be Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 11:00 A.M, at Wright Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be private.
