Bernard "Bernie" Arshenovitz was buried at Bet Olam Cemetery, 25796 Chagrin Blvd., Beachwood, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.2 He Bernard "Bernie" Arshenovitz was honored several times for his contributions for the Jewish community, but he is most remembered for opening his University Heights home to foster youths for more than three decades. He died Feb. 1 at age 84. Arshenovitz and his wife, known as "Uncle Bernie and Aunt Hilda" to the children in their care, were credited for helping many overcome difficult beginnings in life. "They were very committed to children and to this agency," said Sheila Reynolds, a supervisor of foster care at Bellefaire JCB, "and they were always there when you needed support." Arshenovitz was named Jewish Communal Worker of the Century by the Network of Jewish Professionals in 1999 for his personal and professional contributions to the community. He and his wife were honored by the Jewish Children's Group Homes and the Orthodox Jewish Children's Association group homes. In 1989, Arshenovitz helped two teenage brothers from Iran adjust to life in the U.S. and study for their belated bar mitzvah, a ceremony they could not safely prepare for in their home country. He pitched on a JRC softball league team that included his son in the late 1970s. Early in his career, Arshenovitz was a child-care worker at Jewish Children's Bureau, and he started the vocational program at Bellefaire for struggling youths. He was recruited in 1959 to Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) to assist people seeking work, and after JVS merged with JFSA, he led the agency's career directions program. Arshenovitz was predeceased by his wife Olga Hilda and daughter Karen Ivy. He is survived by his son David; daughters Lynne (Adrian) Saidac, Malkie Landau and Jennifer; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his numerous foster children. Services will be held at Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, Fri., Feb. 3., at 10 a.m. Contributions are suggested to Betar Youth Organization or Jewish Family Service Association.2 He was born on March 6, 1927 at Ohio.3 He married Olga Hilda Greenberg circa 1949 at Cuyahoga Co., Ohio.4 Bernard "Bernie" Arshenovitz died on February 1, 2012 at Ohio at age 84.5
