Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016, from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel with a celebration of Mrs. Scearce's life to follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Reverend Doug Ramsey officiating. Born September 16, 1918, Mr. Scearce was the son of Gilbert and Eva Smith Scearce. Both parents died during the flu pandemic when Chester was only 18 months old. He was lovingly taken into the home of a maternal uncle, George Smith and his wife, who raised him as their own child in their family of 11 children. In 1937, Mr. Scearce married the love of his life, Vernell Thompson. He and Mrs. Scearce lived and worked in Danville until the 1970's, then in Wilmington, N.C., Charlotte, N.C. and Deerfield Beach, Fla., before returning to Danville in 1983. Mr. Scearce served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1944 until 1946, and was a member of American Legion Post #325 and VFW Post 637, Danville. An active member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Mr. Scearce served as a Sunday school teacher and on the Board of Deacons. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Scearce enjoyed playing banjo, violin, guitar and dulcimer. Mr. Scearce was predeceased by his natural sister, Frances Scearce Brown Beckham;his "brothers", Alfred, Harold, Ray and Joseph;and "sisters", Beatrice, Lorraine, Yvonne, Della and Edith. He is survived by his wife, and his son, Donald Scearce and his wife, Soncha, who reside in Honolulu, Hawaii. Other survivors include a "sister", Elizabeth Smith Marshall;"brother", George W. Smith Jr;and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, from the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel by the Reverend Ronnie Brown. She is survived by two sons, Randy L. Thompson and his wife, Sharon of Kernersville, N.C., and Bobby W.
