James Kirwan Belcher was buried at Montgomery Memorial Park, Route 60, London, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.3 He was born circa 1952.2 He died on July 1, 1969 at Fayette Co., West Virginia.2,3 He Wreck-riddled U. S. 60 east of Charleston had two more crashes Tuesday — one of which killed the teen-age son of a Montgomery minister. James Kerwan Belcher, 17, was fatally hurt when a 1968 sedan skidded off the highway just west of Montgomery about 1 a.m. He was taken to Laird Memorial Hospital, where he died eight hours later. He was the son of the Rev. Arnold Belcher, pastor of Montgomery First United Methodist Church. Two other youths in the car Michael Gianmni, of, of Smithers, and Michael V. Ballard, 18, of Montgomery were slightly hurt. They were treated at Laird Memorial Hospital and released. A state trooper said the wreck was "the worst I've ever seen." He said the car went into a side skid for 90 yards, then went over a 20-foot bank. Going down the bank, it bounced four times including one 31-foot leap, he said. The smashed vehicle came to rest on its top on the Penn Central railway tracks. U.S. 60 between Belle and Montgomery has been the scene of numerous fatal crashes, and some residents believe the highway to be unusually dangerous. Mortician and ambulance service operator George Cook of Cedar Grove said Tuesday night that, after a new asphalt surface was applied about two years ago, the highway became exceptionally slippery during rains. More than a half-dozen person s have been killed in wrecks on the new-paved stretch during rains, he said. Greyhound bus driver Morris Miller of Hansford commented that he and fellow drivers' have noticed that their buses skid on the highway in the rain to a greater degree than on other roads. Pointing out that his home is across Kanawha River from U.S. 60 he, said: "Every time it rains, I can sit on my front porch and hear the wrecks." But State Police Cpl. E. L. Greathouse of the Chelyan detachment said he doesn't believe the section of U.S. 60 is any more slippery than other two-lane asphalt roads. He said any highway becomes a "slicky-slide" in the rain and he feels rainy roads are perhaps slicker in hot weather. Althoug Tuesday's tractor-trailer crash happened in the rain, the earlier accident that killed young Belcher occurred before the rain began. The youth had graduated last month from Montgomery High School, where he had been president of the student council, a member of the National Honor Society, a yearbook editor, an athletics manager and a member of the Hi-Y Club. He also was a member of First United Methodist Church, where his father is pastor, and served in the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving in addition to his father and mother are brothers, David, a student at West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Alan at home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Montgomery First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park. The body is at O'Dell Funeral Home, where callers will be received after 2 p.m. today, and will be taken to the church an hour before the service. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department. on July 2, 1969.3
