Police said a private ambulance crew following the man's car stopped and applied external heart massage, then rushed the stricken Ronk to Glendale Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He loved the Lord and was a member of Blue Ridge Baptist Church for many years. A true American Hero, he culminated over 40 years of active duty in our nation's military—the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and merchant Marine Corps. Riley was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on May 5, 1941, to the late Lewis William (Ben) Turpin and Frances Boulding Turpin. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Edd O. Hale Jr., and Lucille F. Hale. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Brenda Hale Turpin; brother, Edward W. Turpin and his family, David E. Turpin (Kristin) and LeEtta Turpin and her husband, Father James Detrich; his in-laws, Donald E. Hale (Gloria), Donald Dwayne Hale; Chandler Hale; Cindy Turner (Craig); and Caleb and Jacob Shockley. The family would like to give a special thank you to the many people who helped Brenda during this difficult time, especially Ray and Joyce Sarver, Charlie and Cheryl Turner, Dr. Chad DeMott and his staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for the care and compassion they gave to Riley; and to the many neighbors and friends for the thoughtful prayers who raised Riley up each day to his Lord.
