Bessie Virginia Valentine Houk1,2

F, b. April 26, 1917, d. June 9, 2007
Bessie Virginia Valentine Houk TERRE HAUTE — Virginia Oard, 90, of Terre Haute passed away at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Regional Hospital. She was born April 26, 1917, in Dugger and following her father’s death briefly lived at the Glenn Home until foster mothers Daisie Valentine, the 1st Vigo County Councilwoman and her sister Edna, welcomed her to their farm and raised her to be the wonderful baker, cook, seamstress and gardener that she was. Before her marriage to Richard Oard she worked in the Vigo County Clerk’s Office and later at the ISU bookstore during student registration. Almost all her life she worked at various voting polls during both city and county elections. She was active in 4-H as a member, Junior Leader and Adult Leader. She loved life, especially family, friends, bingo, ceramics, festivals, fairs, following her family’s racing and athletic events, and when able, travelling with Turner Coaches, never forgetting her trip to Hawaii and meeting Don Ho. She was an avid Reggie Miller, Larry Bird and Indiana Pacer fan and would sacrifice almost anything to watch or even attend a game which she did recently with her grandson Daren. Her hands were never idle as she was always crocheting, knitting, crafting, working crossword puzzles or baking. In 1927 she began entering the fair in 4-H and later Open Class, and has entered projects in the Vigo County Fair for 78 years making her family proud of her ribbons for Sweepstakes and Grand Champion Baker. In August 2004, at the age of 87, she took top honors with her Angel Cake as Grand Champion of the Word Farm Show Bake-off and her peach pie recipe is published in The Doughmakers Cookbook. She attended Honey Creek High School and was a member of the class of 1936. She was an active member of the Maryland Home Ec. Club for 43 years of which 28 years she served as President, a lifetime member of NARFE, assisted with organizing the Honey Creek Volunteer Fire Dept. and Auxiliary, an active member in the original Maryland Community Church, its Missionary Society and wouldn’t miss attending youth camp in the capacity of cook. She is survived by daughters, Millie Tucker, Carolyn Krockenberger and her husband Ed, and Susan Oard; grandchildren, Rich Tucker, Daren and Laura Krockenberger, Eric and Jennifer Krockenberger, and Shawn and Leslie Krockenberger; great-grandchildren, Katie, Megan, Kyle, Cari, Kristen, Hanna and Colin Krockenberger and Shae Orr, extended family Karen and Jeff LaChaga, and her dog Amy and special great-granddog Kalli, all of Terre Haute; and a sister, Mary Arthur and her family of Lake Charles, La. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard M. Oard on Aug. 19, 1983 and a son in law, Charles W. Tucker on Jan. 25, 2005. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Selvia officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and prior to services Thursday.3 She was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park, 7500 North Clinton Road, Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.3 She was born on April 26, 1917 at Dugger, Sullivan Co., Indiana.4,3 As of October 24, 1938,her married name was Oard.1 She married Richard Manford Oard, son of Fred Raymond Oard and Mayme Kincaid, on October 24, 1938 at Vigo Co., Indiana.1,3 Bessie Virginia Valentine Houk died on June 9, 2007 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana, at age 90.4,3
