Phyllis was a lifelong resident of the Cross Lanes area. She was an active member of McKinnon Presbyterian Church since 1953 and had been an elder, Sunday school teacher, and choir member, as well as doing anything that was asked of her. Phyllis was a former member of the Tyler Mountain Homemakers, an artist, a seamstress and a quilter. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Lonzo F. Shaffer; daughters, Janet (Rick) Norris of Hurricane, Barbara (Jim) Skidmore of Cross Lanes and Jo Ann (Woody) Snyder of Clendenin; sister, Lola Underwood of Sissonville; and brothers Herbert Price of Sissonville and Willard Price of Ravenswood. Phyllis was blessed with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate Phyllis' life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 9, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Minnerly officiating. Entombment will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to McKinnon Presbyterian Church, 4278 W. Washington St., Charleston, WV 25313. on February 8, 2011.2

"Jim" Groves Jr., 82, of Sandyville, passed away Monday morning at Eldercare of Ripley following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 15, 1932, in Roane County, son of the late James W. and Goldie Elswick Groves. He retired from the scalping department of Ravenswood Aluminum following over three decades of service, loved the outdoors and loved helping his wife in her business, Rita's Antiques. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Reta Campbell Groves; son, Rodney Lee Groves (Robin) of Sandyville; grandchildren, Brittney Groves, Rodney James Groves and Bridget Groves Fulk; and sisters, Willadeen Payne of Walton and Sherry Smith of Clendenin. A service celebrating the life of Jim Groves will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 1 p.m. at Waybright Funeral Home with Pastor Shannon Skeen officiating. Interment will follow the service at Koontz Cemetery, Clendenin. Friends may call at Waybright Funeral Home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m on May 6, 2014.2
