Born July 9, 1929, at Stollings, he was son of the late Clarence E. and Beatrice B. Conner. Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Charles E. Conner and Curtis W. Conner; paternal grandparents, Kyle and Ida Conner; maternal grandparents, John and Lillie Booth, and his father and mother- in- law, Phillip and Myrtle Stone. Alvin was a graduate of Logan High School, National Business College of Roanoke, Va., and served in the U.S. Marine Corp where he attained the rank of Corporal. He was a Past Master of Aracoma Lodge No. 99; Past High Priest Logan Chapter No. 41 of Royal Arch Masons; Past Commander Logan Commandry No. 26; Past Venerable Master; Past Wise Master of Logan Scottish Rite Bodies; Officer of Red Cross of Constantine; Past President of Logan Shrine Club; Member of Beni Kedem Temple Shrine; Member of Krch and 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason; Logan Chapter No. 60 of Order of Eastern Star where he held the office of Warden and a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan. Alvin was one of volunteers when the Food Pantry was started at the church. Alvin was retired office manager from Pittson Coal Company, and formerly worked at Island Creek Coal Company for several years. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball and baseball with various teams in Logan and the surrounding areas. Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Phyllis S. Conner; two daughters, Lisa M. Conner of Charleston, and Rebecca Lynn (David) Alderman of Charleston, S.C; one brother, James L. (Dorothy) Conner of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Pauline C. (Jack) Fortune of Stollings; three granddaughters, Rebecca Nichole, Holly Rachel and Danielle Alderman of Charleston, S.C; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Grace Alderman of Charleston, S.C; several nieces and nephews, and a host of dear friends and other relatives. Services will be held at noon Saturday. September 11, at the James Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Craven officiating. Born March 22, 1932, at Ethel, she was the second eldest daughter of the late Phillip M. and Myrtle M. Stone. Also preceding her in death was her loving husband of 56 years, Alvin W. Conner, who passed away September 8, 2010; one sister, Marlene Stone Rennie; her only brother, Philip M. Stone Jr; her paternal grandparents, Andrew and Jessica Stone, and her maternal grandparents, William and Mary Nicely. Phyllis graduated from Logan High School with the class of 1950, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957 from Marshall College and received her Master of Arts degree in 1962 from Marshall University where she received her certification to teach Elementary grades 1 thru 8; English 7-9 and Social Studies 7-9. She began her teaching career at Slagle Grade School, taught at Holden Junior High School and retired from Whitman Elementary School after 31 years. Her love was teaching second grade at Whitman Elementary. She was a great influence on many young lives. Phyllis was active for many years as a Brownie and Junior Girl Scout Leader and served as treasurer for day camps at Camp Mamie Flynn and also served as treasurer of the majorette group Penny's Prancers of which her daughter was a member. She was a member of Logan Chapter No. 60 of Order of Eastern Star for several years. She was a long time active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan where she was a member of Circle No. 2 and was one of the original volunteers, along with her husband, when the Food Pantry was organized at the church. She also taught Sunday School for many years. Phyllis was a loyal life time member of the Logan Regional Medical Center Auxiliary for many years where she volunteered numerous hours at the front desk, gift shop, fourth floor desk and was assistant treasurer for several years. Phyllis was a great pianist and her love of music and playing piano was often the center of attention at family gatherings, especially on holidays. Survivors include her daughters, Lisa M. Conner of Victory Point and Lynn (David) Alderman of Summerville, S.C; three granddaughters, Rebecca Alderman, Holly Alderman and Danielle Alderman, and two great-grandchildren, Jessica Alderman and Andrew Washington, all of Summersville; two sisters, Vivian (Charles) Smith of Stollings and Sue Hyatt of Peterstown; one brother-in-law, James L. (Dorothy) Conner of Columbus, Ohio; one special sister-in-law, Pauline Conner Williams Fortune of Stollings; several nieces, nephews and other relatives plus numerous dear and devoted friends.
