Samples Sr. of Procious passed away Nov. 20, 2006, at his home after a long illness. Born on Aug. 9, 1932, he was the son of Alta and the late Owen Samples of Bomont. He began working in the oilfields in 1950, first with Davis Oil Company, Bomont, then with South Penn Oil Company, Walton. Darrell retired from Pennzoil Oil Company (old South Penn) in 1990 as superintendent of Pennzoil's central division, Spencer. During his early years working in the oilfields, he moonlighted as a radio and television repairman after learning the trade via a correspondence course and pumped for other small oil companies in the evenings. Darrell was always a hard worker, a math whiz and was very mechanically inclined. He could do complex math in his head and could figure out and fix about anything. The family always went to him for help repairing anything that broke. Darrell was an avid trout fisherman and loved to deer hunt. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Walton. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Samples of Procious; mother, Alta Samples of Clendenin; sister, Loretta Moore of Clendenin; brother, Ronald Samples of Culloden; four children, Artie Samples, Debbie Walker and Sandy Rogers, all of Procious, and Melinda Romano of Maysel; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at Long Sam Samples Cemetery, Procious, with Minister Roger Cummings officiating. The cemetery is located off Route 4 on Elkhurst Road, Left on Samples Mountain Road, top of hill. Dad will be sorely missed as a father and grandfather. To some it will sound strange that I feel my father in every gust, hear him in the movement of leaves as the breeze sweeps through the leaves. Thanks for being our dad. Signed by the family. on November 22, 2006.1
