Smith and wife, Ronda, of Forest, and Terry C. Smith of Lynchburg; her grandchildren, Wayne Reese of Texas, David Reese of California, Christopher Reese of North Carolina, and Justin, Kendall and Nicholas Smith, all of Forest; and four siblings, Lucille Cofflin of Lynchburg, Bernice White of Arrington, Frank Gowen of Lynchburg, and Fred Gowen of Hagerstown, Md. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, Johnny Gowen and Evelyn Hanks. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. on October 1, 2005.2

     Fred Horsley Gowen was buried at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland.5 He Mr. Fred Horsley Gowen, 79, of Hagerstown, died Friday, January 29, 2016 in Hagerstown. He was the husband of the late Betty Lee Rohrer Gowen, who preceded him in death on April 26, 1996. Born April 8, 1936, in Arrington, Nelson County, Virginia, he was a son of the late Frank Leslie, I, and Lona H. Bryant Gowan. Fred was a 1953 graduate of Nelson County High School, and a United States Army Veteran who served in Germany. Mr. Gowan owned and operated Gowan Motor Service, Inc., Hagerstown. He formerly attended Bethel United Methodist Church, Chewsville; and was a member of WD Byron VFW, Post 1936, of Hagerstown, and the American Legion Dixon-Troxel Post 211, Funkstown. He was a very active member of the National Star Route Mail Contractors Association. Fred is survived Susan Dennison of Hagerstown, by his significant other of 19 years; and his brother Frank L. Gowen, II, of Lynchburg, Virginia. Additionally, Fred is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Frank L. Gowen, III, and companion Ann Mason, and Daniel Gowen and wife Audilee, also of Lynchburg, and Bonnie Reese and husband Mike of Arrington, Virginia; as well as his loving & faithful companion, his Yorkie, Jasmine. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Evelyn Hanks, Lila Smith, Bernice White, Lucille Cofflin, and Johnny Gowen. Hospice of Washington County deserves special recognition for the care and compassion shown during Mr. Gowen’s illness. She was the wife of Frank Leslie Gowen Jr. Born Nov. 22, 1938, in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late Webster Lawhorne and the late Nina Campbell Lawhorne. Janet was a homemaker and she was of the Methodist faith. Janet was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by her two sons, F. Les Gowen, III and his fiancée Margaret Ann Mason of Lynchburg and Daniel L. Gowen and his wife Audelee of Madison Heights; one brother, Earl Law horn and his wife Lucille of Eldon, Mo; two sisters, Etta L. Wills and her husband Horsley and Rebecca L. Smith, both of Lynchburg; and one grandson, Emerson D. Gowen. A memorial service was conducted Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor George "Bubby" Rose and Pastor Brady Rose (of Oasis Church in Monroe) officiating. The family received friends following the service. on October 10, 2012.1
