She was born August 12, 1923 in Maben, daughter of the late James Amos Tolliver and Rosa Elzina Perry Privett Tolliver Shumate. Marie graduated Mullens High School and completed bachelors and masters degrees in various educational fields at Concord (College) University, University of Charleston (Morris Harvey), Marshall University, and the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. She often shared memories of her father tutoring her and encouraging her to pursue higher education. She taught elementary classes at many Wyoming County schools, including Sabine, Maben, Glen Fork, Glen Rogers and Pineville. She was one of the first teachers to bring Title I Reading services to Wyoming County students. After retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada, including Hawaii and Alaska where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Some of those travels were in the company of area square dancing clubs. Others were with family and friends. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Marie and her husband also earned their State VIPP (very important park person) badges. In addition to her parents Marie was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Hursie C. (Shorty) Shumate. She was the last of 16 siblings: Thursey Jane Tolliver, John Tolliver, Levi Tolliver, James H Tolliver, Berdine Tolliver, Walter E. Tolliver, Jesse Tolliver, Susie Tolliver Phillips, Obed Thomas Tolliver, Amanda Privett Shumate, Roscoe Privett, Virgil Privett, Arthur Privett, Lillie Privett Kincaid Gunter, Zada Privett Nolan Tolliver, and Alva Privett. Marie is survived by her son, Rudy Donnell Shumate and wife Dreama of Bluefield, VA, her daughter Rose Marie Bell of Morgantown, grandson Paul Michael Gunter and wife Laura of Morgantown, grandson Terry Bell and wife Kara of Morgantown, granddaughter Sharon Ann Putnam and husband Russell of Garner, NC, great-grandchildren Brandon Gunter, Lauryn Gunter, and Lizzy Bell of Morgantown, Megan Robertson and Zach Robertson of Louisburg, NC. Services will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, December 29, 2013 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 2 – 4 PM at the funeral home. Born Feb. 15, 1920 at Trailee, he was the son of the late Fred and Effie Blevins Wood. Educated in Mercer County, he was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal. Clyde was a retired carman for the C & O Railroad, working in the Car Shop at Raceland, Ky. with 15 years of service. Rev. Wood had been ordained since 1948, he had established many churches and had ministered in Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia, retiring in 2003 from the Oakvale Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Craft Wood, his second wife, Martha Robins Wood, along with a son, Thomas Lee Wood; two brothers, Richard Wood and Robert Lloyd Wood; and a sister, Delphia Conner. Survivors: Two sisters, Helen Hart and husband Wesley of Princeton, Hildred Ellen Rockwood of Middletown, Ohio; a host of nephews and nieces. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Ball Family Cemetery, Speedway with Pastor Ralph Calfee officiating. Friends may visit with the family Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton. Those wishing to attend graveside services are requested to meet at the funeral home. The family of Rev. Willard Clyde Wood is being served by the Memorial Funeral Directory and Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton. on August 1, 2004.2

Survivors include her husband of fifty years, Wesley Preston Hart of Princeton; two sons, Charles William Carrico and wife Sandy Gayle, and David Seible all of Middletown, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christopher Matthew Carrico and Ruth Ann Seible; and four great-grandchildren, Christopher Sebastian, Catherine Gayle, Aroura, and Hayley. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ralph Calfee officiating. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Princeton. on January 25, 2008.2
