He had served with the U.S. Army since 1969 and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge in June 1970 for meritorious service in combat. He was a 1968 graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in Salem where he excelled in baseball. He had been in Vietnam since Feb. 17, 1970. Surviving are his wife, Amelia Jane Hough Journell, Salem; a daughter, Amelia Elizabeth Journell; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Journell Jr., Salem; a brother, Howard Frazier Journell, Salem; a sister, Mrs. Elvis Hall, Salem. on July 28, 1970.3 He Spec. 4 Robert M. Journell III, 20, of Rt. 2, Salem, killed in action last July 22 while on night patrol in Vietnam, has been decorated posthumously. His wife, Amelia Jane Hough Journell of Salem, received the medals yesterday - the Silver Star for gallantry, the Bronze Star for meritorious service and the Purple Heart for his fatal wounds. Mrs. Journell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Franklin Hough Jr. of Salem. Earlier Journell received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, and the Expert and Sharpshooter badges for marksmanship. Journell, a 1968 graduate of Andrew Lewis High, arrived in Vietnam Feb. 17, 1970. Other survivors, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Amelia Elizabeth Journell; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Journell Jr., Salem; a brother, Howard Frazier Journell, Salem, and a sister, Mrs. Elvis Hall of Salem. on January 5, 1971.13
