Vernon Wayne Howery Vernon W. Howery, age 83, died on June 7th, 2023 after a brief illness. Vern was born in Montgomery County, Virginia and moved to Camden, New Jersey at a young age. In 1959, at the age of 19, Vern joined the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably for five years. He then began his career at Owens Corning Fiberglass as a furnace operator for nearly 30 years, after which he worked for the Washington Township School district as a custodian for many years until his retirement. He continued to honor his service with the Marines by being an active member of the PFC Giordano Detachment of the Marine Corps League up until the time of his passing, and was a member of the American Legion Post 135 in Gloucester City. Vern is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carrol Howery, his son Vernon (Julie), his brothers Richard (Sandy) and Bruce (Kim), and sisters Judy Rigler (Joe) and Joyce Taylor (John). He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Vernon (Heather), James (Kate), and Dana; along with his great-grandchildren Connor, Emilee, and Vera. He was preceded in death by his son Richard, brother James, and sister Phyllis McClosky. Vern was an avid bluegrass musician. He could be found playing guitar with his band Timber Creek at the Albert Music Hall in Waretown, along with any kind of family gathering. He took great pride in his Virginia roots and would travel there each summer for his large family reunion, so that he could entertain everyone at the Friday Night Jamboree just "pickin' and grinnin'". The reunion at Smart View Park would often end with his rendition of "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". But what truly brought Vern joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. "Pop Pop" was a staple in their lives, playing and teaching them guitar and surrounding them with music and love. The "tough, ol' Marine" would simply melt around his grandkids.6 He was born on April 13, 1940 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.4 He married Carrol Holmes in September, 1962 at Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey.5,7 Vernon Wayne Howery died on June 7, 2023 at New Jersey at age 83.6

Carrol Holmes Carrol Howery (nee Holmes), age 78, died on her birthday, March 15th, 2024 after a brief illness. Carrol was born in Camden, New Jersey into a large family, being the youngest of eight children. She grew up in Gloucester City where she met the love of her life in high school, Vernon Howery with whom she raised two sons as a homemaker. She later resided in Deptford, Brooklawn, and Runnemede, however Gloucester City was always "home". Carrol is now reunited with her husband of 60 years, Vernon, who passed away just nine months ago; and with her son Richard, from whose loss she never truly recovered. She is survived by her son Vernon (Julie) and her sister Ruth "Sissy" Maull. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Vernon (Heather), James (Kate), and Dana; her great-grandchildren Connor, Emilee, and Vera; her loving niece Patty Moats and Nephew Tommy Holmes, and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Henry, Joseph, Tommy, and Donald, and her sisters Mary Ann and Joan. Carrol was well known as a funny, social and caring person that would also not take gruff from anyone. If she had the means, she would give you anything you may need including "telling you how it is". Yet as tough of a cookie as she was, she would never hesitate to tell you how beautiful you were or how much she loved you. What you saw is what you got with Carrol - a truly genuine, fun-loving, spit-fire of a woman. She could often be found with her friends at the VFW or American Legion, where she was loved by many, and she loved them all as well. Interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Sewell.2 She was buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 550 Delsea Drive, Hurffville, Gloucester Co., New Jersey.2 She was born on March 15, 1946 at Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey.2 As of September, 1962,her married name was Howery.1 She married Vernon Wayne Howery, son of James Francis Howery and Edith Loraine Light, in September, 1962 at Camden, Camden Co., New Jersey.1,2 Carrol Holmes died on March 15, 2024 at New Jersey at age 78.2
