His automobile had a blowout and lurched to a sudden stop on the side of the road, four miles south of Gretna. He died a few hours later. Surviving are the parents, two brothers, Calvin Tanksely, and Dewey Tanksely, Jr., and a sister, Miss Ruby Tanksely. on August 20, 1945.⁶

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Reynolds and Roger Wilcher officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 43. on May 7, 2015.³

Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Payne had been employed by the Gretna Building Supply and Chatham Building Supply. She was a member of Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served her Lord as bookkeeper for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her parents Dewey and Cordie Tanksley, three brothers, Billy and Calvin Tanksley of Gretna and Dewey E. “Jack” Tanksley of Chase City and a son, Edward Lee Payne Jr. of Amherst, VA. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Gail D. Payne of Amherst, a daughter, Pattie P. Meade (Vern) of Sumter, S.C; and three dearly loved grandsons, James “Jamey” D. Gowdy, Jr. (Laura) of Sumter, SC, Edward Lee Payne, III of Roanoke, VA and Matthew Hunter Payne of Richmond, VA.
