     William Robert Tanksley was buried at Payneton UM Church Cemetery, Whittles, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2 He was born on May 20, 1925 at Whittles Depot, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2,4,5 He died on August 18, 1945 at Danville, Virginia, at age 20.2,3,6 He William Robert Tanksley, seaman second class, died Saturday afternoon at 5:18 p.m. at Memorial Hospital in Danville where he was carried following an auto wreck caused by a blowout in one of tires. The 20-year old sailor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Tanksely, had come home for the weekend from the Navy Air Station at Norfolk. His automobile had a blowout and lurched to a sudden stop on the side of the road, four miles south of Gretna. He died a few hours later. Surviving are the parents, two brothers, Calvin Tanksely, and Dewey Tanksely, Jr., and a sister, Miss Ruby Tanksely. on August 20, 1945.6

He was a retired supervisor with the Lane Company, an Army veteran of World War II, a member of American Legion Post 232 and was of the Christian faith. He is survived by a brother, Dewey "Jack" Tanksley of Chase City and a sister, Ruby Payne of Gretna. Burial followed in Payneton United Methodist Church Cemetry. on December 28, 2004.7

He was preceded in death by a son, Phil Tanksley, and is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mona Tanksley; daughters Lisa Tanksley of Chase City, Lori Dawson and husband Dwight of South Boston and Angela Arrington and husband Gary of Bedford; his sister, Ruby Payne, of Gretna; grandchildren Tori Dawson, Logan Arrington and Bryce Arrington. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Reynolds and Roger Wilcher officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 43. on May 7, 2015.3

     Ruby Earline Tanksley Ruby Tanksley Payne of Gretna, passed away June 20, 2015, in South Carolina at the home of her daughter, Pattie Meade of SC. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Payne had been employed by the Gretna Building Supply and Chatham Building Supply. She was a member of Gretna Pentecostal Holiness Church where she served her Lord as bookkeeper for over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her parents Dewey and Cordie Tanksley, three brothers, Billy and Calvin Tanksley of Gretna and Dewey E. “Jack” Tanksley of Chase City and a son, Edward Lee Payne Jr. of Amherst, VA. She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Gail D. Payne of Amherst, a daughter, Pattie P. Meade (Vern) of Sumter, S.C; and three dearly loved grandsons, James “Jamey” D. Gowdy, Jr. (Laura) of Sumter, SC, Edward Lee Payne, III of Roanoke, VA and Matthew Hunter Payne of Richmond, VA. Interment to follow in the Payneton United Methodist Church Cemetery.6 She was buried at Payneton UM Church Cemetery, Whittles, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.6 She was born on August 21, 1932 at Gretna, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2,3 As of February 17, 1951,her married name was Payne.7 She married Edward Lee Payne Sr. on February 17, 1951 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.7 Ruby Earline Tanksley and Edward Lee Payne Sr. were divorced on September 29, 1965 at Pittsylvania Co., Virginia.2 Ruby Earline Tanksley died on June 20, 2015 at South Carolina at age 82.6
