     Katherine Mae/May Wegner Katherine Wegner Metzger, of Cedar Creek, NE passed away at the Louisville Care Community on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, where she had resided since April 2009. Katherine was born on December 24, 1922, in Council Bluffs, to Edward F. and Dorothy (Donahue) Wegner. She was raised and schooled in Council Bluffs, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School. Katherine was engaged to John Hildebrand of New York City. John was killed in action during World War II while aboard a Naval Ship that was hit by a Japanese Torpedo. She later met Captain William A Metzger and they were married on April 7, 1948, in Council Bluff, IA. They made their home at the family farm in Cedar Creek, NE. Katherine was a past member of P.E.O. Chapter F, in Plattsmouth, Louisville Women's Auxiliary, a 4-H Leader, and St. Mary's Guild, St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Plattsmouth. Katherine loved her family and all the special pets she adored throughout her life and made the best beef stroganoff in Cass County. She is survived by her daughters, Lisa & husband Jim Grotrian, of Plattsmouth, NE, Christine & husband Edward Lacy, of Loveland, CO, Michele Metzger, Nicollet, MN, and son William & wife Teri Metzger, of Cedar Creek, NE, granddaughters Jennifer Lacy, Elizabeth Metzger and Amelia Nelson, grandsons Will Lacy, Chris Metzger, Alex Metzger, and Tory Nelson, one brother, Edward & wife Anna Mae, of Council Bluffs, IA, nephew James (Sandy) Hall, of Landisville PA, nieces Cathy Borland, of Steamboat Springs, CO, Susan (John) Coursolle, of Savage, MN, and Sherry (Randy) Leaders, of Elkhorn. Preceded in death by her parents, Edward & Dorothy Wegner, in-laws Christian & E. Belle Metzger; brother and sister-in-law Neil & Marguerite (Metzger) Hall; and her beloved husband William. Metzger, 70, of Cedar Creek. He passed away Sunday morning, July 21, of a heart attack at Bishop Clarkson Hospital in Omaha where he had undergone surgery earlier in the week. William A. Metzger was born October 21, 1914 in Mynard, Nebraska the son of Christian E. and Etta Belle Martin Metzger. He graduated from Omaha Central High School and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for several years. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity while at NU. During World War II, he served at the rank of captain in the US Army in the Quartermaster Corps. Following his service he farmed and raised cattle on the family farm by Cedar Creek. Until his retirement earlier this decade, he sold insurance and real estate through the Schneider-Metzger-Fitch agency in Plattsmouth. Senator Metzger had a long and distinguished career of public service to Nebraska. He served four terms in the Nebraska Unicameral, 1941, 1947, 1949 and 1955. At the time he served the 2nd district was compromised of Cass and Sarpy counties. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), serving from 1963 until 1974. He served as vice-president to the board for four of those years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 56 in Plattsmouth. His local service included membership on the Cass County Planning Commission, and the Plattsmouth Public Schools Cooperative-Vocational Education Committee. He also served on the judicial nominating commission for the Nebraska State Supreme Court, Fourth District. In 1967 he reigned as King of the Kass Kounty King Korn Karnival. In 1967 the Metzger Family was recognized for the AkSarBen Pioneer Farm program for 100 years of continuous ownership of the family farm by Cedar Creek. He was a communicant of State Lukes Episcopal Church in Plattsmouth. He is survived by his wife, Katherine, daughters Lisa Metzger of Lincoln, Christine Lacy, Loveland, Colorado, Michele Metzger, Maryville, Missouri, son William R. Metzger of Cedar Creek, sister, Marguerite Metzger Hall of Lincoln. on July 22, 1985.3
