In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of choice. Graveside services will be conducted 3p.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at Franklin Memorial Park with the Rev. Bud Nichols and Tom Sullivan officiating. on December 11, 2016.3

He was 82. He was the son of the late Charles Browning and Gladys Glenn. Gordon was born in Logan, West Virginia and graduated from Logan County High School. He attended Marshall University and served as an Armor Officer with the Maryland National Guard. Gordon earned a Master’s Degree from Washington College and a PhD at the University of Maryland. Gordon taught Graduate School Statistics at Washington College and worked for 35 years with the Maryland State Department of Education. Gordon retired in 1996 as the Director of Pupil Services and Special Education for Kent County Public Schools. He was married for 57 years to the late Eva Browning who predeceased him on January 18, 2020. Gordon served in leadership positions with every organization of which he was a member. Gordon was a member and Past Master of Chester Lodge #115, member and Past Commander of Frank M. Jarman Post 36, and a member of Chestertown Elks Lodge #2474. His contributions to the American Legion included Commanding at the Post, District and State level. Gordon also served as a National Vice-Commander of the American Legion. Gordon was a consummate volunteer. He was a Boy Scout, Sunday school leader, teacher, school administrator and advocate for patriotism and love of Country. Gordon spent the bulk of his life giving to others. He also coached and mentored people across the state of Maryland for the American Legion to enhance the organization’s overall performance. Gordon and Eva were committed to their service organizations and truly loved the friends they made along the way. He is survived by his son Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Byron Browning, his daughter-in-law, Kathleen, his daughter, Mary Conklin; and five grandchildren: Olivia Alligood, Madison Browning, Hunter Browning, Spencer Conklin and Winston Conklin. A private memorial service will be held on April 27th at the Eastern Shore Veteran’s Cemetery in Hurlock, Maryland. on April 21, 2020.2

Eva was the daughter of Simon and Regina Schiller. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Doctor Gordon Browning; her son Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Byron Browning; her daughter-in-law Kathleen; her daughter Mary Conklin; and five grandchildren, Olivia Alligood, Madison Browning, Hunter Browning, Spencer Conklin and Winston Conklin. Eva was born in Sulzbach-Rosenburg, Federal Republic of Germany on March 20, 1936. She immigrated to the United States in 1957 through Staten Island in New York City and became a proud naturalized citizen eight years later. Eva was a longtime resident of Chestertown, Md., having relocated there in 1972. She worked at Washington College for 35 years in both the business office and with the department of public safety. Eva volunteered endless hours with the Post 36 American Legion Auxiliary, serving in numerous leadership positions at the local, district and state levels. Eva's recognized leadership led to her election as the President of the American Legion Auxiliary for the State of Maryland. As President, she travelled across the state of Maryland, officiating, speaking and visiting Legion posts through this role. She developed lifelong friendships with people all around Maryland. Eva was instrumental in advocating the American Legion Auxiliary mission to support the American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of veterans, military and their families, both at home and abroad. Eva played a vital role each year as a staff member for Girls State. She worked with future youth leaders and inspired in the girls a sense of patriotism and love of Nation. Eva loved her family and friends and she will be missed by all who knew her. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private memorial service will be held later at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery in Hurlock, Md. on January 30, 2020.1
