Rickert, 53, who was convicted of starting one of Pennsylvania's worst forest fires in March, died in a traffic accident in the same forest he accidentally burned. The Lock Haven outdoorsman was awaiting sentencing at the time of his death. He owed the state Bureau of Forestry $79,000 for inadvertently starting a wildfire in Sproul State Forest in April 1990. "He wasn't like everybody said. He was a good man. He didn't set that fire," Rickert's widow, Evelyn, said. State police at Lock Haven said Rickert was speeding north on Route 144 at 6:15 p.m. Sunday when his pickup veered off the road and skidded 130 feet. The truck collided with a large, graffiti-defaced boulder known as "Coffin Rock." Route 144 is the only artery cutting through the forest's heart. Clinton County Coroner Dean K. Wetzler Jr. pronounced Rickert dead at the scene. The coroner said he died of massive chest and head trauma. Authorities said the crash was not alcohol-related. A jury detennined Rickert lit a trash fire that was whipped by the wind until it charred 9,656 acres of the mixed-oak forest in Centre and Clinton counties. on December 3, 1991.3
