She was a member of the Eastern Star and Mary Burns Chapter 24 and was a past member of the former Keithsburg Methodist Church. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses, where she worked as a missionary since 1952. Mrs. Portner enjoyed singing, reading, knitting, and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. While attending high school, she was the senior class vice president and performed in leading roles in the plays. While the family resided in Hawaii, Mrs. Portner was president of the P.T.A. Survivors include her husband, Freelin Martin Portner of Durango; a son, Jack Portner of Loomis, Calif; four daughters, Shirley Edwards of Castlerock, Wash., Virginia "Ginny" Butler of Chula Vista, Calif., Lani Marie Munsee of Durango and Sandra Munsee of Woods Cross, Utah; a sister, Fern Sanders of Kirksville, Mo; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. on August 26, 2000.6

He Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Kingdom Hall, located at 2537 County Road 203, Durango for Freelin Martin Portner, who died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000, from multiple mylenoma at his home in Durango. He was 97. Mr. Steven Geiger will officiate. Mr. Portner was born May 15, 1903, in Deadwood, S.D. He was raised in Casper, Wyo. He learned his trade as a machinist at the refinery in Casper. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1927. He and Irma were married on April 29, 1931. Mr. Portner retired from the U.S. Navy and moved his family to Spanish Fork, Utah, where he worked as a machinist at Geneva Steel. In 1964, he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. After their five children were grown and gone from home, Mr. and Mrs. Portner moved to Oxnard, Calif., where Mr. Portner served as an Elder in the Nyland Congregation. They moved to Durango in 1967. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Arline Portner on Aug. 27, 2000. Survivors include his son, Jack Portner of Loomis, Calif; four daughters, Shirley Edwards of Castlerock, Wash., Virginia "Ginny" Butler of Chula Vista, Calif., Lani Marie Munsee of Durango and Sandra Munsee of Woods Cross, Utah; 22 grandchildren; and two generations of great-grandchildren. on October 28, 2000.2

Belt of Granite City, Ill; six grandchildren and five greatgrandchlldren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Lee Kalkis. Funeral services were held Mon., Nov. 19 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Waterloo with burial at 2:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sigourney. The Kearns Hutsman-Schumacher Chapel of Waterloo was in charge of arrangements. on November 21, 1990.3
