Ethel Mae Gemberling1

F, b. September 15, 1918, d. June 15, 2009
Her Social Security Number was 210-22-0901.2 Her married name was Bowen.1 Ethel Mae Gemberling married Vinton Edward "Pete" Bowen, son of William Francis Bowen and Dora Myrtle Conner.1 Ethel Mae Gemberling was born on September 15, 1918 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.1,2 She died on June 15, 2009 at Jamison, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, at age 90.1,2 She The Bowen, Herman and Mattes' families are sad to share the loss of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ethel Mae Bowen, who left us after 90 joyous years. She passed the morning of Monday, June 15, 2009, at her home in Jamison where she has lived for the last 26 years with her daughter and family. She was the wife of the late Vinton "Pete" Bowen. Born in Philadelphia, Mae was raised by her grandmother on the "infamous" chicken farm. She grew to be a legend at the Highway Diner, and a mainstay behind the toaster at Tilley's Family Restaurant, spanning 70 years. At Tilley's, "Mazie" provided buttered toast, perfectly toasted bagels, and exemplary service with a "Hiya Hon" and a contagious smile to residents of Doylestown. In addition to serving the above delicacies, her full-time job revolved around helping to care for a robust family of five grandchildren from birth. Kiki, Missy, Matthew, Andrew and Becky are forever indebted to their "Gram" for unconditional love and unwavering support throughout the years. Her spunky attitude and forthright comments will be deeply missed by those who have come to love her. She is survived by her three children, Shirley Herman, Wayne Bowen and James Mattes; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. While she has left us physically, her memory has left an imprint on our hearts forever. We love you and will never forget you - Mom, Gram and Gigi. There will be no viewing or funeral as Mae made a wonderful donation to the Humanity Gifts Registry. Mae's family extends an invitation to all of those friends she has touched throughout the years. There will be a celebration at her old stomping grounds, now known as "Aunt Judy's" at 120 Veterans Lane, Doylestown from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, July 6. In lieu of flowers, we ask all of those who she left too soon to bring their best memories and to wear their favorite Philadelphia Phillies Shirt/Tilley's Shirt to Mae's Celebration.
