Orval Ray Riffe Nov. 11, 1922 – Sept. 24, 2010. RALEIGH, NC — Orval Ray Riffe, 87, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Friend to all, and loved by all, went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday. He was the son of the late Duffy Alderson Riffe and Beatrice Stephens Riffe. A native of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, Orval was educated at Crab Orchard Grade School and Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, West Virginia, where he graduated in 1940. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater for three years. He was discharged December 11, 1945, and entered Marshall College (now Marshall University) and graduated in 1951 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation from college, he worked in Columbus, OH, working to design and build an airport. After returning to West Virginia, he worked for Faye, Spottford and Thorndike Engineers designing the original West Virginia Turnpike. When the Turnpike was finished in 1955, he deigned the roads for Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, while waiting to move to North Carolina. In 1953 he married Norma Jean Allen, his wife of 57 years. They moved to North Carolina in May of 1955 where he served as a Design Engineer and Project Engineer for North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Retiring in 1984 from NCDOT, he went to work for Thompson, Gordon and Shook Engineering. He retired there in 1987 but continued to work part time until 1989. Upon retiring, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, South America, Canada, Mexico, the Western U.S. and many Caribbean Islands. He served his church, Mount Moriah, as Church Treasurer for twenty-two years and also as a deacon for many years. He was a member of William G. Hill Masonic Lodge for fifty years. He is survived by his wife, Norman Allen Riffe; son, Gregory Allen Riffe and wife, Shari, of Harrisburg, NC; daughter, LuAnn Riffe Lenz and husband, Brian, of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Tracy and wife, Jane, of Beckley, WV, Ellis and wife, Alice, of Crab Orchard, WV; sisters, Alice Faye Riffe of Crab Orchard, WV, and Frances Riffe Dickerson and husband, Ray, of Beckley, WV; six grandchildren, Emily Caroline Riffe, David Brian Lenz, Adam Lee Lenz, Ryan Holzmeyer, Adam Holzmeyer, Jennifer Holzmeyer Louthan and husband, Michael; and great-grandson, Noah Louthan. He was predeceased by a sister, Hester Riffe. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Monday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, 4 to 6 p.m. at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC. Tracy Lee Riffe Tracy L. Riffe, 88, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Born November 30, 1924, in Crab Orchard, he was the son of the late Duffey Alderson and Beatrice Stephens Riffe. Following his graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School and Beckley College, Tracy enlisted in the U.S. Navy during which he served in both the North African and Pacific Theatres during WWII. The majority of his professional career was spent with Beckley Federal Savings Bank where he served as president for numerous years. In addition, Tracy was a member, former Deacon, Trustee and Treasurer of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and a member of the Crab Orchard Hunting Club. In addition to his parents, Tracy was preceded in death by a sister, Hester Plumley, and two brothers, Orval and Ellis Riffe. Survivors include his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Martha Jane Riffe; daughter, Sue Ellen Swepston and husband Clark of Flat Top, WV; granddaughters, Emilee Payne and husband Michael of Charleston and Andrea Campbell and husband David of Princeton; international granddaughter, Olga Semenova Allen and Mark of Germantown, MD; great-grandchildren, Elisabeth, Molly and James Payne, Grace, Sarah, Elijah and Erin Campbell and Peter Allen; sisters, Frances Dickerson and husband Ray of Beckley, Alice F. Riffe of Crab Orchard; sisters-in-law, Alice M. Riffe of Crab Orchard and Norma Riffe of Raleigh, NC. He will be sadly missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Sisson officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley. Pallbearers will be Duffey Riffe, Greg Riffe, Randy Cook, Rick Cook, Jerry Phipps, Johnny Phipps, Kelly Phipps and Robert Skiles.3 He was buried at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.3 He was born on November 30, 1924 at Crab Orchard, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.2,3,4 He married Martha Jane Phipps on May 29, 1948 at Oak Hill, Fayette Co., West Virginia.2 Tracy Lee Riffe died on April 3, 2013 at West Virginia at age 88.3

Ellis Elsworth Riffe Ellis Riffe, 85, of Crab Orchard, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012. Born June 10, 1927, in Crab Orchard, he was the son of the late Duffey Alderson and Beatrice Stephens Riffe. Ellis was a retired machinist having worked for Long Airdox in Beckley. He was a member and former deacon of Crab Orchard Baptist Church, Friendship Sunday school class, charter member of the Crab Orchard-MacArthur Lions Club and a former young man's basketball coach at the church. Ellis served with the U. S. Navy during WWII. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Hester Plumley, and a brother, Orval Riffe. Survivors include his wife Alice Faye Meek Riffe; son, Duffey A. Riffe and wife Amy of Asheville, NC; daughter, Beth Richards and husband Patrick of Crab Orchard; grandchildren, Griffin Riffe, Heather Fisher, Tricia Macalka, Daniel and Allison Richards; great-grandchild Landon Macalka; brother, Tracy Riffe and wife Jane of Beckley; sister, Frances Dickerson and husband Ray of Beckley; sister, Alice Riffe of Crab Orchard; sister-in-law, Norma Riffe of Raleigh, NC. Fink, 60, Crab Orchard, died at 8:10 p.m. Thursday in a local hospital after an extended illness. Born at Ghent on Sept. 6, 1897, and was a son of the late George and Nancy Lilly Fink. He had been a life long resident of Raleigh County and was a miner until his retirement. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, and local Union 5767, Helen, United Mine Workers of America. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lakie Riffe Fink; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Gunther, Crab Orchard, and Mrs. Hazel Manning of Crab Orchard; and one son, Garner Fink, Glen White; five sisters, Mrs. Blanche Lilly, Mrs. Ray Tolley, Mrs. Esther Winner, and Mrs. Bess Snuffer, all of Beckley, and Mrs. Allie Reed of Glen Morgan; one brother, H. A. Fink, Crab Orchard. Ten grandchildren also survive. The body will remain at Calfee funeral home until 4 p.m. today when it will be taken to the residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church with the Rev. Shirley Donnelly officiating. Burial will be made in Calfee cemetery at Mount Tabor. on January 3, 1958.5

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Okey Gunther in 1957; second husband James McVey in 1978 and a brother, Garner Fink. Survivors include a son, Dain Gunther of Columbus, Ohio; daughter Mrs. Roger (Wanda) Wood of Crab Orchard; a stepson, Melvin McVey of Charleston; a sister, Hazel Manning of Crab Orchard; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel in Beckley with the Rev. Jim Mundy officiating. Burial will be in the Calfee Cemetery at Mount Tabor. Friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley. Pallbearers will be Jerry Fink, Sean Gunther, Mike Toon, Kenny and Bill Manning, and Henry Pettry. on August 24, 1989.4

Funeral service will be at her church, Crab Orchard Baptist Church, at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2001, with the Rev. Phillip Shields, the Rev. David Trump ll and the Rev. Bill Withers officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, and at the church one hour before the service Saturday. The body will be taken from the Keyser-Bryant Funeral Home to the church one hour before the services. Pallbearers will be Clyde Fitzpatrick, E. C. In 1956, he entered the insurance business and was a partner in the Sutphin-Riffe Insurance Agency until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Riffe was a faithful member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church where he served on many boards and committees. He was also a member of the Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF & AM for over 50 years; the Mount Hope Commandry and the Benii Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston. He was also a 50+ year member of the Beckley Elks Lodge and a former member of the Beckley Lions Club. Survivors include his wife of over 56 years, Helen Reed Riffe; two sisters-in-law: Edith Jane Riffe of Crab Orchard and Mary Belle Wilson of Moore Haven, Fla., and by several nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23rd in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Michael Sisson officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery, Beckley. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday at the funeral home. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Ray was a graduate of VPI (Virginia Tech) with a B.S. and an M.S. in engineering. He served in the U.S. Army from January 1954 to December 1955. After a long career with Westinghouse, he worked as a consultant for several firms, and retired from Americold Corp. He resided with his wife, Jean, at Grandview. He was a member of Northgate Southern Baptist Church in Beckley. He was a member of MENSA and Intertel. Friends may call at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, on Wednesday, May 16, at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Rev. Craig Stevens officiating, an eulogy will be delivered by Rev. Jack Donald Riffe Jack Donald Riffe, 73, of Petersburg, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, December 11, 2008, with his family by his side. Jack was born in Crab Orchard, West Virginia, the son of the late Cecil Owen Riffe and Mary Evelyn Riffe. He served in the U.S. Air Force for five years, stationed at Chelveston Air Force Base in England, where he met his lovely wife of 50 years, Anne. Jack worked at Fort Lee in the photo lab and DOIM Department for 40 years, before retiring in 2003. He was a loving husband, father, friend, and to his grandchildren, he was their "Big Daddy". Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Riffe; sister, Wanda Grant; and brothers, Tommy and Owen Riffe. He is survived by his wife, Anne Riffe; daughter, Debra Riffe and Victor Lavimodiere; son, Alan Riffe and his wife, Beth; granddaughters, Kacy Hitchcock and Katie Riffe; brother, Teddy Riffe; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service on Monday, December 15, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crater Community Hospice, 804 West Roslyn Rd., Suite E, Colonial Heights, Va. 23834, or to Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, P.O. He is the son of the late Cecil Owen Riffe. Sr. and Mary Evelyn [Elliott] Riffe. He was born March 10, 1940 in Crab Orchard, West Virginia. He was a 1958 Graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, West Virginia. He attended West Virginia University from 1958 to 1959 and the University of Oregon in Eugene from 1961 to 1967, completing his five-year bachelor of architecture degree. He started spending his summers in Alaska in 1962, and in 1967, after graduating from college he became a full time resident. During his life in Alaska, he lived in Hooper Bay, McGrath, Fairbanks, Hope, Girdwood, Kotzebue and Anchorage. He worked for the U. S. Forest Service from 1959 to 1961 and the Bureau of Land Management from 1962 to 1969. From 1972 to 1992 he owned the firm of Riffe and Associates. He worked as the city administrator for Hooper Bay from 1980 to 1983 and 1994 to 1995. He worked for the AVP Regional Housing Authority from 1998 to 2000. He was owner and principal manager of World Planning, Design and Management from 2000 to 2007. He served as a school board member at Iditarod and Lower Yukon School District. He enjoyed painting, carving, sculpture, reading, traveling and hiking. "He was a great man and a caring father and grand-father," his family wrote. He accomplished a lot for the Native communities. He designed and built many buildings throughout Alaska. He dedicated his life to his children. He lived by the words his father told him, which were 'honesty, sincerity and the will to do good.' He would never turn his back on anyone who needed help. He was very much loved and respected by all. Survivors, his children, Auna Riffe, Cecil Owen Riffe III, and Evelyn Riffe; his former wife, Dorothy Riffe; brothers, Jack and Teddy Riffe; and four grand-children. He has many cousins, nieces and nephews throughout Virginia and West Virginia. on February 15, 2008.3
