Octavia West Goldsborough "Alma A." Sowder was buried at O. E. Price Memorial Park, Logansport, De Soto Parish, Louisiana.3 She SHREVEPORT, LA - A celebration of the life of Alma S. Dodd, 92, will be held on Thursday, December 10th at 10:30 am at the First United Methodist Church of Logansport. Officiating will be the reverend Kemper Smith. Interment will follow at O.E. Price Cemetery in Logansport. Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 9th at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Logansport, and a viewing will be held at the Church from 9:00 until 10:15am prior to the service. Alma was born as Octavia West Goldsborough Sowder, a fact not known to her for 67 years, on June 26, 1917 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Tony and Eva Goldsborough Sowder, and passed away the night of December 6, 2009 from stage 3 dementia. Prior to moving to the Live Oak Retirement Community in September, 2001, Alma had lived in Logansport for forty years after moving there with her family from Fayettvile. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Logansport, where she served the church in many capacities, including as both a youth and adult Sunday school teacher, board member, and officer of the United Methodist Women. Alma turned her love for antique collecting into a business by founding Alma's Antiques in 1978. She also served as Corporate Secretary of her husband's business, Center Hatchery and Farms, Inc., for many years. She was a leader in her adopted hometown of Logansport, where she led early recycling efforts, and served in many other volunteer capacities. Most importantly, she led by example and touched the lives of many people. Her motto was "People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be", which she repeated often. She not only made up her own mind to be happy; she spread that happiness to countless others. Affectionately known to friends as the "energizer bunny", she had boundless energy and a positive spirit that lifted all around her. Family was always foremost in her heart, and her family not only included her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but countless other "kids", each of whom she loved as her own. Her smile was contagious, her hugs abundant, and her grace unending. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles W. Dodd, her parents, and by brothers Jack and Tony Sowder. She is survived by her sons, Charles W. Dodd, Jr. of Austin, James R. Dodd of Dennison, TX, and David A. Dodd of Shreveport; and daughter, D. Deean Shinall also of Shreveport; ten grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Alma will be missed by all who knew her, and no less by the wonderful people at Live Oak, who the family is greatly indebted to for the care they provided her through the years, and those at Willis-Knighton Hospice, who gave excellent care in her final days. By their own admission. they, along with Alma's fellow residents, were often lifted by her smile, the sparkle in her eyes, her hugs, and her dancing. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 177, Logansport, LA 71049. "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love"-1 Corinthians 13:13.3 She was born on June 26, 1917 at Fayetteville, Washington Co., Arkansas.5,3 As of December 20, 1936,her married name was Dodd.6 She married Charles William Dodd on December 20, 1936 at Washington Co., Arkansas.6,3 Octavia West Goldsborough "Alma A." Edna Luella Carnahan1,2,3

Edna Luella Carnahan Edna C. Sowder, age 101, of Fayetteville died Monday, January 12, 2015 in Austin, Texas. She was born October 21, 1913 in her family’s farmhouse near Butler, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph E. and Bertha Hill Carnahan.
Her family came to Fayetteville in 1909 by train. She would tell how they opened the train’s windows for fresh air but would also get smoke and soot that covered everything and embers that burned holes in their clothes. Her father had rented half a box car to bring their household, only to find it had been sent to Fayetteville, N.C., arriving two months later. Edna’s family moved to Fayetteville before streets were paved, electricity, or automobiles were common place. Her family home near Gregg & North St. was at the far north edge of town, before North Street was cut. Walking was her transportation. Gregg St. was little more than a dirt road, so when Edna left home for elementary school she’d wear an old pair to shoes to begin her walk, crossing Scull Creek over stones before there were any bridges, then when she reached the south side of the pasture, that later became Wilson park, she’s change into her good shoes to finish her walk to school, leaving her old pair in a hollow log for her return trip home. She earned a Biology degree at the U of A, got her first job in Rogers teaching Biology and Hygiene, then her second year was asked to teach English which she did until her retirement from Ramey Jr. High 30 years later. During her career she earned a Masters in English, and memberships in Kappa Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Gamma educational organizations. Edna married Jack N. Sowder, who she’d met in the third grade, having their son Glen. With her sister Ruby, they tended their families flower and vegetable gardens, giving flowers and some of the best tasting tomatoes, peas and okra to family and friends until Ruby’s passing. In 2008 Edna moved to Austin, Texas to be cared for by family. Her tenacity, wit and good nature endeared her to those who helped her, evoking tears at her passing. While her life may have ended in Austin, her heart never left her family and friends in Fayetteville. Thank you Lord for Edna, for your blessings and mercy you have given through her, thank you Lord. She is survived by her son, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren. Cremation under the direction of Moore’s Chapel.2 She was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Fayetteville, Washington Co., Arkansas.3 She was born on October 21, 1913 at Butler, Butler Co., Pennsylvania.2 As of April 28, 1937,her married name was Sowder.1 She married Jack Norman Sowder, son of Anthony R.
